Why do people think christian rock sucks?

Because it does.

dracomage1996: it's just as good as real rock.
Poor choice of words there, you just answered your own question.

I was actually talking about this today and I feel like it's because a lot of people who listen to christian rock, even good christian rock, are more concerned with the "christian" part, than the "good" part.

It also doesn't help that all the christian rock I've listened sucked.
It's hard to say whether or not Christian rock can lay claim to Norman Greenbaum.

If it can, well then I like some Christian rock.
A lot of it does because it focuses mainly on being an evangelical tool instead of, well, music. Also, the wisdom of Hank Hill.

dracomage1996: WHen all is said and done, it's just as good as real rock.

Look at Family Force 5, Skillet, We as human, Children 18:3, The letter black, Demon Hunter, or Thousand Foot Krutch.
Nothing Christian is as good as real life.
As many other europeans (yep ... asumptions...) , I think I culturally can take those bands seriously.
Actually, some used to be good metal bands, like Stauros.

The best Christian rock band is this:

It's usually highly derivative, by nature.

IAmSinistar: You're answering your own question, putting it on par with genuine rock rather than saying it IS genuine rock. If you know that, then you know why a rock purist doesn't like it.

The term "rock and roll" comes from Black American musical roots, the term itself being slang for sex. That original stuff is raunchier, grittier, and funkier than the White American rock that rose out it. Christian rock takes the white rock and bleaches it until it's see-through, leaving a pale trace of what the genre represents. Sure, it may sound like rock, but, and you'll forgive this, it lacks soul.

Can Christian influenced music be good? Hell yes. I love stuff that draws from that well ranging from the medieval vocal work of Anonymous 4 up to the folk hymns created by the Violent Femmes and Neko Case. But stuff that is deliberately pitched as Christian rock, along with Christian metal, is simply music for people who like that style but whose faith prevents them from listening to most of the bands that perform it. Like sugar-free candy and caffeine-free coffee, you are free to like it, but it's a diluted substitute for the real thing.

tinyE: Does "Gwar" count as Christian Rock or am I wrong about that?

IAmSinistar: Seeing as they are from my city, I'll venture an answer, which would be "no". They draw from a lot of mythology, and they certainly have a fascination with blood and suffering, but their affect is very Roman mixed with Pagan. Of course, a lot of modern Christianity is Pagan too, they just forget where they got it from.
^^^THIS. As someone who tried to like it back in the day, that is exactly spot on.

(and I have to admit, the South Park episode where they try to form a Christian band may not be far from the truth either :) )

I was shocked when I found out Skillet was a Christian Rock band. First off, the radio was playing their songs. Except for Creed when they first came out, I can't think of too many of those bands that actually get on the radio. The second reason was I liked both of their songs I heard quite a bit. And while I didn't pay that much attention to the lyrics, I didn't notice any that hit me over the head with "we're religious".

Gwar is definitely not a Christian band if you ever saw them in concert. :) They had water cannons made to look like penises and were shooting "cum" all over the audience. I don't like their music but they sure put on one crazy show.
Define "Christian Rock" a bit more to me (beyond your OP) and I might have some answers when I wake up tomorrow mate - as its such a broad term and does not have defined genre sound.
It doesn't matter if its christian or not. Its about the quality of the artist, and the music. I don't care for rock, so I cant really contribute to that at all. To me, the majority of rock seems to be about the creation of sounds, and not about how those sounds should be woven together. Of course, next to punk rock, any other rock sounds like a friggen symphony. That's to my ears I mean. I took a music theory class, in which i leaned that a lot of that has to do with how your brain is trained. Its why music from certain cultures that use the full scale sound dissonant to those of us who use the simplified western scales. But anyway, back on topic-ish, Its not just about the genre. I also hate rap/hip-hop, and I hate it just about as much as I hate punk rock. Yet I have heard some stuff by Ohene, and I really like it. While his music isn't all christian, a lot of it is. That's not whats important to me. Whether the song is christian or not, the lyrics are good. Not only are his lyrics good, but his music is good too. That really impresses me, because most rap music seems to be there just so the lyrics have something to go with. Its like mustered on a hot dog. Mustered is good on a hot dog, but you don't see me eating it by itself. The only other rap I know of that I like the music for the music is some of Eminem's stuff.

Yeah, might wanna break away from the "pop" end of rap - theres a decent hip-hop thread here with plenty of entries - quite a lot should be more akin to your theory trained tastes, but it will be up to you to see the vocal as that extra instrument, and you wont find it in the work of Eminem.
Hope you find summat new through that at least :)
