Gandos: most of them wouldn't even consider DRM-free even with games that have been pirated to hell and back for years (FF VII being a notable example).
Wait, FF VII's DRM-free? Everywhere I've seen it it's always been Steam or some other DRM.

Ugh....I was referring to VII as an example of a game that has been pirated to hell and back for years, yet the publisher (Square Enix) refuses to release it in DRM-free form. I did not say that VII is DRM-free (well, aside from the original retail release, of course).

The fact that the original release was DRM-free is what makes it utterly weird to add DRM afterwards. If it had always had DRM, laziness might explain S-E's not removing it, but instead they wasted money paying someone to add DRM when it couldn't possibly stop the game being copied around. It's like trying to restore virginity.

Chacranajxy: The character sprites, mostly. Just terrible. There's also the problem of FF6 using a bunch of different art styles on top of each other. You can have a couple of filtered sprites from the original SNES version of the game, the new, gaudy charcater sprites, and then a poorly-done 3D model all next to each other, and it all clashes. It's really a hackjob.

Gandos: What crap? I can't vouch for IV Advance (I think it was a port of the Wonderswan remake), but the other GBA ports (Dawn of Souls, V Advance and VI Advance) were all pretty good. My only real complaint was that DoS reduced the difficulty of FF I/II way too much; they should have kept it closer to the difficulty of the Origins (PS1) version. The iOS ports do look like crap, though.

RayRay13000: I suppose people think the GBA ports were "shit" since the soundtracks for those games weren't the same (the GBA VI one was alright).
There are some hacks to fix the GBA soundtracks and color palette.

On a topical note, Square Enix says that they are interested in bringing more Final Fantasy games to PC:

"... we see potential in it and there are lots of regions and countries where PC is very strong. So in terms of our hope of being able to deliver our games to every single country in the world and to as many gamers as possible, yes, we would definitely be interested in pursuing that route in the future."

Let's keep pressing them on these topics and let them know that we want to see these games on GOG.

Which is their way of saying we still don't want to sell on PC in Japan. So yet again, no chance of these games coming to GOG.

And to clarify the FF series is one Square seem very reluctant to make available (easily) on PC in Japan. And when they do, it's at a hugely marked up price in comparison to ROW. So that's yet another strike against them being on GOG.

It's a start, but yeah, Square having any real presence on PC is still a ways away. The only game I could see them bringing to GOG for the time being would The Last Remnant. In any case, I think Capcom and Sega are are more likely (and more interesting) targets.

Well, it looks like the "no regional pricing" argument is out the window.

So, how about it, GOG? Let's get some more Japanese games on here!


And honestly, the fact that regional pricing was the only way for GOG to get over the hump with their latest games only bolsters my original thoughts on why there are so few Japanese games on here... the hangups that both Western and Eastern publishers have in putting out games on GOG seems to be nigh identical. I have to wonder if it's a lack of interest, or just a lack of perceived demand.
