If it's because someone has something new to contribute to the discussion, whether it's a new viewpoint or new developments have made the discussion relevant again, that's all fine and dandy.
However, quite often, people resurrect 3+ year old threads just to say "I agree" or something stupid like that which doesn't contribute to the discussion at all. Also, lots of people will then see the thread on the front page of the forum, assume it's a new thread, and start replying to posts made by people who haven't been on the forum for several years, until someone points out that the thread has just been necro'd. All in all, it's basically a waste of time for everyone involved.

I know people get riled up over all sorts of various forum behaviors, but for the bulk of it I'm fairly accepting. That is until someone starts necroing dead posts for weird reasons. #1 forum pet peeve (maybe my only one)
There are select cases where it makes sense, like if the original poster gets to bring some sort of resolution to the thread, but most of the time it makes little sense at all. Asking some additional question that is only in the vaguest of ways related to a 2 year old topic isn't going to yield results when everyone starts answering the original question and debating non-existent users.
No, we don't need 6 posts in one day about ET getting unearthed, but it is Ok start a new thread about a similar topic years later. We aren't going to run out of threads - make a new one. Have the exact same question as someone else 18 months ago? A year or two later all that discussion is probably rot - start a new one.
