Arkose: When Star Wars first appeared on DVD they deliberately released the remakes first and then a dual release (with both versions) a while later.
This is what I got (the dual release, that is). I'm tempted to throw out the "Special Edition" disks, but you never know when they might come in handy. I might have a party and be short on coasters or something.

No one in my family even owns a Blu Ray player. I've seen DVD and Blu Ray side-by-side and the difference is not enough for me to care about. Not worth a 15%+ surcharge on all movies, at least.

orcishgamer: We'll never see Han shoot first again, I own no copies of Star Wars, period.
Exactly. I had a DVD of the original, unedited, "Han Shot First" version of "Star Wars" (or, "A New Hope, as it was later called) that was a bonus disc with a remastered DVD a few years back, but I loaned it to my cousin and he misplaced it. Annoying, but honestly, I am over Star Wars. I'll probably try out The Old Republic whenever it comes out, but that is more because it is BioWare than because it is Star Wars.

Star Wars games are still a good source of entertainment. I don't think we'll ever see anything as great as the X-Wing or Dark Forces/Jedi Knight series again, but I attribute that more to a downward shift in the quality of games in general than to the state of Star Wars (even though it's pretty abysmal too). I still enjoyed The Force Unleashed and Battlefront II, even if they weren't perfect.

nondeplumage: So who's buying the trilogy for the umpteenth time?

Unless the damn box says original theatrical release, they can produce one less copy for me. Actually, any word on that end? Can't seem to find anything.
I have totally given up the Buy, Buy, Buy, Buy when it comes to movies. If I can not get it streamed or DVD / Blue Ray from netflix I will never see it. Leaves more $ for compter games.
I have the special edition version and I don't mind having that. I also would like to get my hands on the original versions though (if the blu ray had them). Of course I would have to get a blu ray player too. So probably a pass for me. :)

Hells yeah! I don't even have a Blu Ray player yet, but I must own HD copies. I will find a way to get my hands on my old PS3 again, or buy a cheap player.

Speaking of, I've always wanted to see the first Mortal Kombat in HD. It would look flat-out ridiculous, in the best way possible.

Voight-Kampff: I'm waiting for Adywan's Revisited HD-versions at this point. I've spent enough on Lucasarts halfassed releases.
This guy knows what's up. I suggest everyone else starts knowing what's up too.

I'm trying to download it now. The changes list and screen caps look awesome!
Bluray is a waste of money. People falling for a dumb gimmick. DVD players are much more common, accessible, and don't look that much worse. The big thing for me however, is the price. DVD's are way cheaper. I honestly don't understand why anyone would buy the blu ray version when they have the DVD version?

Then again, this is coming from the guy who never buys movies. I bought The Village, The Good The Bad and The Ugly, and Shawshank Redemption. Thats it, my all time favorites that I will watch over and over.

The Blu-Ray versions of many movies look amazingly better. It all depends on how much effort goes into the transfer. 2001: A Space Odyssey and Blade Runner look fucking jaw-dropping on Blu-Ray compared to DVD.

As for Star Wars I'm not sure. I only really like Empire Strikes Back, but the first and third are big movies from my childhood as well. I hate the changes made to them though. It will probably depend on price.

I recommend the PS3 over the cheap player, if you can manage it. Most of the stand-alone players I've seen are either too slow loading menus, or bug out on some discs entirely. I'm sure that's not how all of them are, but I've yet to see anything but excellent performance with a PS3.

Actually, I can see a great difference in quality when the Blu Ray is one containing a newer film, which is designed more for high def in mind. I mostly watch older films though, and even with excellent clean-up jobs, they aren't often much better than DVD. All the same, some older films such as "The African Queen" were restored quite well. This is of course on a 1080p TV.

At the same time, I agree with your perspective that DVD is good enough. (At least most of the time.) I still purchase DVDs now and then, even occasionally over a Blu Ray edition.

Shitty upscaled or shitty remastered Blu Rays are a waste of money. But Blu Rays can store far, far more stuff and look better than anything ever, and Blu Rays are getting a whole lot cheaper. There are ever bargain Blu Ray bins at stores now.

Well worth your money if you love movies.

I love movies but I can't be arsed to wait for 3 minutes of boot time for 15 freaking dollars. I can get as many 720p movies streamed from Netflix as I can stand and 720p does look almost as good as BluRay.

BluRay is a good technology ruined by corporate stupidity.

Well good technology at the core, anyway.

If you want to watch movies on large screens, Blu-ray is essential. We finally have a format that we can project without it looking awful. It's just a stepping stone to even higher resolutions though, which I wish we had access to.

How big is your projection? On a 47 inch LCD 720p looks nice. It's not as nice as outdoor shots in 1080p and you can tell a slight difference in really well done movies like Speedracer, but really it takes care of most stuff fine.

We're not talking about overcompressed 720p alternatives, either. If you get good 720p, most stuff will look close enough on my 47 inch missing out on 1080p doesn't bother me. And again, who wants a 3 minute load time so the DRM inside the DRMed virtual machine can load?

Of course, YMMV, each person will have a preference. I just hate paying a premium for an experience that gets messed up like BluRay does, especially when I have an alternative that is pennies in comparison.
