paladin181: That kind of thinking means you never buy anything because something bigger and better is always right around the corner.

Gnostic: Nop, I buy when I absolute need it, or when it becomes a problem, or when it is so cheap that my reasoning is suspended. Rarely before.

When I can get on nicely without purchasing something for so long, most likely I do not need it.

This kind of thinking let me survive the smart phone hype. When people are changing into iphone 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, I still can use my 5 year Nokia phone. I rather like that, it can drop many many times and will be still functioning. I only need to charge my phone once per week instead of smart phone daily / half day battery charge.

New is not better, as KiNgBrAdLeY7 says, Latest doesn't always mean best!
well thats nice for you
but these 5 hard drives work for me
and since i am the one who has to use them it seems it all works out eh ?

and i with 136 gog games
and 272 steam games which i tedn to install and back up
i do need quite a bit of space

as well as mods
60 gig worth of music
etc etc tec
As I said back in my days as sysadmin: "You still got space left? Well your backup strategy must suck." :)

WTH judge someone for buying hard drives for backup purposes?

Gnostic: I only manage to back up a little portion of my GOG games on my external HD.

That is because my internet provider charge about 7 dollars for every GB above my 10GB quota. The Witcher 2 need about 20GB to download everything and my download cost will be very much higher than the price of the game itself. I can buy 10-20 witcher 2 game with my download cost.
That seems awfully low quota. I thought Singapore is one of those more advanced places where everyone has a cheap unlimited 100Mbps connection?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_in_Singapore

I have an unlimited 10Mbps cable modem connection whose price is included in my housing costs (ie. every apartment in this house has the same connection included in the housing costs). With a little more extra monthly cost, I could expand it to up to 100Mbps I think, but I decided to stay with 10Mbps for now. Maybe I want faster if and when I want Netflix or some other streaming (movie) services.
I am in the process of backing things up. I bought a new WD 2TB for that purpose since I estimated out of a random sample size that it should be enough for now and for the foreseeable future.
I am backing up the windows English installers and all the bonus material. When I am done with that I might backup the Linux installers but without the downloader app it is a pain so probably I won't. I will never own a Mac, so I have no need for the Mac installers.

I rarely play games, I am more of a collector and I only buy stuff at very high discounts. In my youth I played my fair share of many of these games, some bought legally some shared between friends (students rarely if ever can spare 40-60 euro for a game). Now that I have the money I buy them partly as a token of appreciation for the creators for the fun they gave me during my student years.

And for that I thank GOG for making the games available DRM free and available online, so I support their business model as well with my purchases.

That is last year news. This year they introduce quota to the mobile broadband service.

The fiber optic service however still remain unlimited...... for now......

But I am renting and my landlord wants to sell the house, hence I need mobile in case I have to move out.

Oh, you are relying on a mobile internet connection only? That explains it then.

I think here it is more common (with mobile connections) that if you go over certain monthly limit, your speed will be reduced for the rest of the month. Not like you where you have to pay pretty high extra charge for each additional gigabyte.

Right. Gotta plan ahead for games like Witcher 3 for example. The first two games are huge already. :)

exactly
the witcher 2 is already too big for 1 blu ray

and final fantasy 13 is a gob smacking 60 gig

snowkatt: and hard drives can develop bad sectors and will fail as well
there is no real secure way other then making back ups of back ups and backing that up too
^That's what I do. To me a backup is just that, a backup, there's no need to be redundant in usage of the term in the sentence. The only way to be secure is to have at least 1 copy (a copy being a COPY, which means you have 1 already, so 1 copy makes 2 total in existence, 2 copies makes 3 total in existence, etc.) It's a matter of how redundant with your backups you want to be. I do almost the exact same thing you do, a few HDs with many TBs of space all partitioned out into varying sizes to be usage and storage drives.

Either you own a very special Witcher 2 version, or you are using some chinese pirate BR disc hahaha, because the standard BR disc can hold 25GB, 50 for dual layer.

But yeah, i know that feeling, nowadays games are between 30~50 GB. Back in my childhood games could be transported in 5 1/4 and 3 1/2 Floppy Disk, days used to play FlashBack and AnotherWorld.

not if you include all the extra''s which is another 16 gig on top of the actual game

and a standard blu ray holds 22 gig not 25 trust me on that one

and ff 13 is an insane 60 gig urgh
I did in the beginning when I started using GoG but with almost 400 games in my library I just can't keep up so I need a new system where I only backup the games I REALLY want to save. Considering how few GoG games I actually play it doesn't really matter that much.

Ah, but those extra content can be filtered since it includes material in several languages and not all is essential.

Although i haven't tried, FreeArc could compress the game very nice and save you some vital GB. I think the game I have compressed the most with it has been Hitman Absolution, something more than 30GB was reduced to 10GB.

Could be fun just try to compress Witcher 2 and then include the whole set of extra content in the BR hahaha. In FileForums this type of works are done to several games, and even split into DVD.
So far i am keeping all the important installers on my HDD but as soon as i get an external HDD (preferably 1 TB) i will put all of my current and future installers there.

Also as was mentioned before in this thread really like the ability to back the installers (so if i move to a new home in the future i can just pop the device with the installers in the PC and be ready to play without the need for a internet connection.
