According to the gog blog (glog?) gog now has updated 30 games with FLAC soundtracks. I don't consider myself a super audiophile or anything, but I definitely go for FLAC when I have the options. So I was wondering, which game soundtracks should I download? Being a compulsive hoarder, the best answer, obviously, would be "All the ones you can", but I'm curious about which ones the community thinks I would like, so I don't have to listen to 50 tracks that are "okay" to get one that is incredible.

As far as my own tastes go, game soundtracks/songs I've loved include Monkey Island 2, King's Quest 5 (Town music, Weeping Willow, etc.) & 6 (Nightingale's song, Girl in the Tower), Conquest of the Longbow, Quest for Glory (Erana's Peace, the main theme tune), Lord of the Rings (the Charles Deenen soundtrack to the original, top-down RPG by Interplay), Morrowind's main tune.....I'm listing all the slower ones, but I also loved Alexander Brandon's stuff in Jazz Jackrabbit and Deus Ex, Sonic the Hedgehog, loads of tracks off Robert Prince's Doom soundtrack, Patrick Phelan's Lotus soundtrack, Beyond Good & Evil's "Propaganda!" song.

So while I can understand the viewpoint that game music shouldn't call attention to itself (as it seems to be these days), from my tastes, I hope you can see I'm specifically looking for stuff that's catchy and enjoyable to listen to (so operatic "epic" bland tunes don't work, except when they're for Morrowind, and by Jeremy Soule :P).

The fallout OST is great.

I really like the soundtrack to Broken Sword + 2.
The full soundtrack from Alan Wake is also good, oh and also the Assassins Creed soundtrack too.

Go Torchlight, unless you already have the Diablo 2 soundtrack then don't bother because it's more or less the same thing from he same composer.

Along with Carmageddon and Broken Sword (thanks darth and 011284mm). I already have Torchlight's soundtrack, I remember going through it once, nothing really stuck out to me, but how come you mention it in relation to folk music? I didn't get that sort of vibe off it...

Speaking of that, though, I also have the soundtracks that came with the Humble Bundles. I have all of the main Indie ones so far (loved the VVVVVV, Bit.Trip games, and Bastion soundtracks), as well as the Botanicula, Double Fine (enjoyed a couple of the Amnesia Fortnight tunes), Voxatron, Introversion, Android 7 & 8, Deep Silver, Frozenbyte (loved that 90s disco tune from Shadowgrounds), WB, THQ, Mobile 2 and Android 7 & 8, Paradox, Daedalic, Telltale, bitComposer. Sorry for listing them like that, but mentioning all the games would take forever. Those are a LOT of soundtracks, and I've probably only scratched the surface, but if there're any awesome gems hidden there as well, I'd love to know.

Broken Sword, the woman singer tracks are pure bliss!

If you have, and have not listened to the Witcher soundtracks then I recommend them given they are probably my personal ST favorites. They are kind of big, fantasy, epic sounding which may not be what you were fishing for, but they are solid. TW2 can be a tad repetitive with a lot of note pattern reuse, but that is part of how ST's are made.

Don't know what the Torchlight talk is about. It's not on the FLAC list. It is a good in game soundtrack, but removed for pure listening enjoyment it's a bit hard to get into. It's very background, ambient style.

Witcher 1+2, hands down best game music I've heard in the last few years. The Dwarven Stone by Stone (or something) track from TW2, chills.

Speaking of the Fallout OST, I heard one of the tracks on there sampled a song from Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works Volume 2.
