I remember playing The Settlers IV way back when and enjoying it. However, reading various reviews, I'm wondering if a different Settlers is better? I noticed there are several, I really like the "old style" looks of the IV and I don't need multiplayer. I've read that III is better than IV, but I supposed ti comes downs everyone's preference. Who here recommends which Settlers? II, III, IV...?
Prepare for fifty different answers. :P

I loved #3 but #2 probably speaks better for the series as a whole.
i spent countless hours in settlers 3 back in the day.
For me II is the definitive (if flawed) settlers game. Also I find it a bit funny you call III and IV "old style" because I still think of them as new. Mind you I am a bit old school and haven't bothered with settlers newer than IV..

Settlers II, 10'th Anniversary

/end thread.
The 4th one, because that's the one I played more. Nuff said...

Imho IV is a fine game, but it failed to bring a new experience to those having already played II & III. But if you haven't played them , III or IV are good choices. But don't buy both. Settlers II anniversary edition is probably better, if you like that style of graphics.
I've always wanted to try one of these myself. Will keep an eye on this thread. It's really too bad GOG doesn't have a poll feature.

amok: Settlers II, 10'th Anniversary

/end thread.
This, pretty much. Settlers II was awesome, and it's no coincidence they chose to do a remake of that one. On top of that, the 10th Anniversary Edition is the best remake of a game I've ever seen. They updated the graphics to modern standards while keeping the original design, they fixed the minor problems the original GUI had, and everything else they left just as it was.

To anyone wanting to get into the series, I highly recommend Settlers II 10th Anniversary Edition.

Same here but I want a sim where you can progress by any means possible. So it's not end game if you want to have a small, dysfunctional village! Good thread...will follow closely
2 or 2 10th Anniversary
They are all good but 2 stands out

Settlers isn't really a sim series, they're strategy games. Each mission has specific goals you need to reach, so it doesn't sound like they would be your cup of tea.

Well said. I consider it a slightly more complicated RTS. Think AOE with some extra middlemen involved. In AOE you build the barracks and get your troops. In Settlers you need the barracks, and the weapon smith, and the processed materials to make the weapons, then you get your troops.
I'm also confused and can't say which Settlers is the best. So I ended up buying Tzar. ^^
