I have seen and played a little of Lionheart and of Fallout 2 but not enough to really think which one to pick.

Here's the problem-

I like the real time system of lion heart, I like the races, the fantasy setting but the story isn't as strong as Fallout 2.

On the flip side, I like the story of fallout 2, but like all other fallout games, I don't think that I'll be able to finish the game due to its difficulty. Ive heard from a number of people that some of the last fights in game bosses took over a half hour to an hour and you have to be very careful about timing your attacks. That is something that I don't like.

Has anyone finished fallout 2 as a melee expert? If fallout 1 and 2 are like that, I might as well go with lion heart.

I don't even know what the hell Lionheart is, but your pick should be Fallout 2 because it is the most incredible of things.

So you have played fallout 2 Is the game playable near the end for melee characters? I don't like ranged weapons so if it isn't I'll stick with lion heart.

Fallout 2 is playable with melee and it is amazing.

Lionheart... seems like it at first, but goddamn if that game isn't insanely hard. Someone forgot to balance things when they made that game. I honestly have no clue how it is possible to legitimately finish it.

Did you like Arcanum? If you didn't play Arcanum, then the answer is to get it instead of the other two, if you liked Arcanum, go with Fallout 2, if you didn't like Arcanum so much, go with Lionheart.

Fair warning, the beginning "training" mission is Fallout 2 is absolute ass, just get through it, the rest is much better.

Then Fallout 2. Same thing, only with a mini-gun and power armor.

Both, actually.

There's one segment at the end where you run a gauntlet lined with dozens of monsters that shoot near instagib crossbows while dodging lava pool traps. Needless to say it was one of the least enjoyable experiences in gaming (a number of reviews commented on that part as well).
The worst part is that you can skip basically every boss fight with a high diplomacy skill, yet there is no way to get past any of the minions aside from absurd amounts of brute force. The "companions" are completely useless and dumber than a pile of bricks, and usually die within their first two fights.

The game has a great premise and a fantastic setting, if you can somehow force your character to not die all the time, it can be rather enjoyable, otherwise it's an exercise in frustration.

I read one of the reviews. It said that the reason most people fail is because the game forces you to come back to fights and grind/exp farm to the max. It also said that ranged weapons are screwed and even magic leaves at a disadvantage. Melee is almost required as you close to it within 2 seconds.

After reading all of that, I'll take my chances with fallout 2. I might have to grind a little extra with fallout 2 with my melee guy so I dont have problems with endgame fights. Thanks to all of you for the advice!

I have melee'd through Fallout 2, both unarmed and melee weapons. I found the melee option quite easy after you got few levels. You just have to make sure, that you have enough stats for the more powerful unarmed attack variants - if you go unarmed that is.

Also I dont think the boss was -that- big deal. Anyway unless I remember wrong, there are other ways to go around the ending than straight melee killing anyways. Tech skills can come handy...

Fallout 2 is one of those 'must own' games if you're into RPGs. Until New Vegas came out it was about the best example of what you might call a true RPG - in the sense of the level of player choice on offer. It still offers more choice than New Vegas, but NV is the better game.

Well Fallout 2 is a well known classic and Lionheart is the unknown underdog.

So the obvious choice would be Fallout 2, just that you can talk about it to the elitists nerds
