Every now and then my account flags up that a game I own has been updated which is great news. However, is it possible to tell which file has been updated i.e. has extra bonus content been added or has the game itself been updated? At present the only solution appears to be to download everything again?

Normally there are enough people and blue responses to figure out what updated :-)
