Licurg has license to verbally brutalize the hell out of me however he sees fit and I in turn get to do the same to him. Granted everyone here has carte blanche on me but he's never told me to tone it down and he never misses a chance to point out I'm only "half a man" :P. Fact is, and without meaning to sound too mushy, I love the hell out of that guy.

I've bought the second one on here but have yet to try it, so I can't say much about it. Seems relevant, though, if OP likes Oblivion style games.

Oh, how about Jade Empire. Started playing that not long ago and it's a very solid 3D Action-RPG, and the setting and combat is a nice change from the usual games of the genre.
So, when and where is the marriage ceremony? :P

@CharlesGrey: Yeah, graphics, age and 3D and 2D don't bother me. I just don't want to walk into game which is too complex for a beginner. I suppose a bit of complexity isn't bad, but I'll obviously need to sit it out and slowly get indulged.

The community here is pretty chilled and friendly. Well, except you're joining this place at a bad time, what with all the raging about the introduction of regional pricing and such. Normally people here are cool though. Even the crazy ones.

I'm not so much into the highly complex RPGs and the like, either, in part because playing them eats up so much time. My top recommendation is still The Witcher 2 if you haven't played it. The first one is good, too, but has a few rough edges -- overall the sequel provides a more polished, smoother and more intense game experience. And give Jade Empire a look, if you'd like to try something with a more original setting. Both games are pretty straightforward, have multiple difficulty options, and start out with tutorial areas to explain all the basics.

I recommend Jade Empire to anyone who liked either KOTOR games though JE is a little more complex, IMO.

Glad I don't seem to be alone or too needy. I've heard a lot of good about Witcher 2 but I'd feel I'd miss out on the story if I ditch the original? Am I wrong or is it like Mount & Blade where you can just pick up Witcher 2 and it'd be fine?

The only Star Wars games I've played were back on the N64, so I really couldn't say. And I've only played Jade Empire for some 10-15 hours or so, but so far it seems simple enough. Combat can occasionally be challenging, but it mostly requires good reflexes and timing, not necessarily complex strategies. Character development seems fairly basic, too. After all this was released on XBOX back in the day, so I guess they tried to keep things simple, compared to some PC exclusive RPGs.

I do think so, yes. The game does a good job explaining everything and introducing you to the game world, even if you haven't played the first game. Which makes sense, because the first was a PC exclusive, afaik, and the second was also released on XBOX 360, so they needed to make it easily accessible for people who never heard of the series before.

Technically, the series started in book form, anyway. So if you wanted to start at the very beginning, you'd probably have to start with the novels.

Of course, if you want, you can start with the first game. The combat is a bit awkward, and there's a few other minor annoyances here and there. It does however have the same excellent atmosphere and storytelling as the sequel. There's very few games which do Medieval Fantasy as well as the Witcher series. As you've probably heard, The Witcher 3 will supposedly be released on GOG later this year. Got pretty high hopes for that one.

I don't want to be rude here but:

Planescape: Torment: Not the best game to start with. It has the best story an RPG could have, but I don't think you will like the interface or gameplay.
Fallout (any): Have you guys forgotten that you can no longer buy Fallout from GOG?

Anyway, here is my advice:

Since you liked Oblivion, it seems you are more like a First Person Action RPG. Since you also requested something simple, I guess the Diablo-clones like suggestion like Torchlight are a good start.

However, if you are looking for a good story, and still keep the Oblivion-like interface, you can try Ultima 9 (yeah, I know most of you will disagree). Of course, you could try starting with Ultima IV, but I don't think you will like anything about it except the story.

If you don't mind party-like 3rd person view RPGs, before going for Planescape: Torment, I would suggest Baldur's Gate first then Baldur's Gate II, then Planescape Torment.

Then again, Jade Empire has good graphics and a good story.

Caution! I'm here to argue with you!
I'm an advocate of playing the first game first. I felt like the second game assumes that you already know the returning characters, and some basic story elements (like what the hell a "witcher" is.) I think you would be missing quite a lot of back story.
Personally, I think I would have been pretty lost if I had started with the second game.

The X360 version was released almost a year after the PC version, so I'm not too sure if making it more accessible to X360 players was on their mind when they were making the game. I might be wrong - I obviously wasn't on the team, I'm just guessing :P
