mogamer: $3 per episode is a rip-off. Buy it on disc and you'll get 22 episodes for $15 - $25. And pretty much all tv season collections offer 5.1 audio. And Blu-Ray's are in 1080p, which is much better than the "HD" you get from downloads.
Looking at House M.D. in particular, only season 6 and 7 have been released in BD. And I don't have a Blu-Ray drive, so ripping might be a bit of a problem.

wodmarach: So are most TV shows unless they are from the last couple of years and if you want them just get the Blu ray and a cheap drive for your comp...
Even then most of the newer ones are. I think starting sometime in the '80s or there abouts most TV shows went digital for recording which means that unlike The Prisoner or ST:NG there isn't the ability to go back to the original tape and get something that wasn't already there.

those are just upscales a decent upscaler will do it just aswell

StingingVelvet: It's a real shame... if someone sold TV episodes and movies with no DRM as simple downloads I would probably be their biggest customer. Nowhere does though, so instead I buy the occasional DVD but mostly just live without.

Correct and IIRC they had to redo the SFX in large part because of that. It kind of sucks for people that are wanting shows from the era between moving to tape and filming in HD.

yeah it really is a test to see if it's worth the expense of making the new SFX they've had to make a whole new virtual enterprise-E as the movie one can't do all the actions they needed and was designed for long shots (the virtual galaxy class was only made when Nemesis was being made and is for background only hence lower res...)

I live without, they've made them so freaking annoying I have to actually rip my Netflix DVDs before I can watch them. Those "rental" versions of the disk remove all the extra features and cram even more unskippable ads in them. Lame.

As for the OP's problem, it sounds like you want a streaming solution. It's overall cheaper if you watch a lot of TV. Not sure if you have one available in your region but you should at least check, around here you can stream a lot of TV for 7 bucks a month (well, movies and bunch of other stuff too).

Yeah, it's pretty insane. Often times I have thought about watching a movie or show I own but then skipped it because finding the disc, skipping the ads, getting through the menus, skipping more ads, is all just such a fucking hassle. If someone sold simple downloads it would be double-click and boom, movie starts (ideally).

iTunes is pretty easy that way, but the DRM stops me from supporting it. Maybe one day they will drop that shit like they did for music, but I doubt it.
