MrEco: I should mention that I never played the original FFVII. That's why I'm so desperate for a remake. Theres no way I'm EBay hunting for the original FFVII and a PSOne just so I can play a 10 year old game. However, considering it's a Final Fantasy title(not to mention that it's widely considered the best in the series) I feel like I'm contractually obligated to at least try it.
Also, the fact that it was on three disks shouldn't be a problem since many, many times I've seen DS games that surpassed the graphics of PSOne games by leaps and Olympic bounds.
I have both the original and a PS1, I just use an emulator to play my PS1 games though.

There is a PC FF7 that's prob cheaper and you dont have to buy a psone
I enjoyed FFVII quite a bit, in fact I think it was the only Japanese RPG I've ever enjoyed (unless you count Shenmue for the Dreamcast in that catagory), and I played quite a few of the other Final Fantasy games. Of course, the last time I played it I was twelve years old. I saw the movie they made out of it awhile back and I thought it was, for lack of a better word, retarded. Yet it seems it was quite popular among JRPG fans. I get the feeling that my enjoyment of that game had more than a little to do with my young age at the time and nostalgia.
Not to say that it was completely without merit, but I think that's one game I'll just leave in the past as a nice memory.

It's questionable if it would work on Windows XP/Vista though.
...GoG?

It's probably the last game I'd like to see on GOG.

Didn't know there was a PC version. It would be a great addition to GOG!
Actually I'd love to see it, but the PSX version, not the horrible PC version.
About the videos. The PC and PSX versions use different formats... the PC version uses an absolutely horrible Indeo video format that is just unbearable to watch. The PSX version uses an even simpler scheme, but amazingly manages to produce much better quality: All videos are saved as a stream of JPEG images without any interframe compression.
The space requirements are mostly because of these inefficient formats which require at least 1mbit/s for even remotely watchable quality in low res videos. Using a modern compression like h264, the same quality can be achieved using roughly a quarter of that bitrate.
About the game itself: FF7 is as much a JRPG as it is an interactive movie. The focus was on creating a good scenario during a time when most other developers were still trying to figure out how they could blow up their arcade games so that they could claim to make full use of the new CD media.
Today FF7 may not be very remarkable anymore, but back then it simply blew us away with a level of story and character development that we hadn't seen before. It basically created the modern JRPG genre.
The fight system itself is simplistic and not really meant to challenge you. FF7 uses it more to fill the empty gaps between two cutscenes.
It's really all about the scenario, about making the world that the game plays in believable... which is also why FF8 is actually my favourite part: The world is much easier to understand for a European guy than the sometimes bizarre world of FF7.

This is the first reason video why you're wrong.
This is a follow up.

Ahem... WeClock: Read my post. I said "back then". The videos (well the 60% of the first video that I could stand to watch, because it's really just a lot of bull) talk only about games that arrived much later or of remakes of previous games which also arrived much later.
FF7 definitely was impressive back then. I'm not saying anything about how it would hold up today (other that that I still like the characters and yes, I do won a Sephiroth figurine), but back then it was great.

Nope, it does talk about games back then, and the second video talks about games that were released BEFORE final fantasy seven.

OK, I also gave part two the usual 60% before I couldn't stand it anymore: Chrono Trigger, FF4,5,6, Secret of Mana and so on and so forth are all very good games and I enjoyed them tremendously... but I still don't see why FF7 must logically be terribly bad because 4, 5 and 6 are very good.
And as I said before: FF7 is not the best game ever. In fact it's not even my favourite FF. And it is far from being my favourite game. But back then it still was impressing. And to a certain extent (as much as is possible in such a video), even the guy you link to confirms that.

this is actually unrelated but cool.
I'm not saying it's bad, even the guy says, it's over rated. And that's sort of the point. If impressive, it's only mildly so.

I still don't think it's overrated as a milestone of game development, but what the hell, we'll never agree on this anyway.
About the video: I always find it very disturbing when adults dress up as clowns/mimes/video game characters/whatever. And the fact that it's carnival in Germany right now doesn't exactly mean that I need MORE people in stupid costumes.

Shadowdragoon: Why in the world are there so few people who dont like FF8? its my personal favorite.
only bad thing in it, is that the enemys scale in level, so you cant buff up before a hard boss, because the boss gets tougher too..

Weclock: or you know, the major plot hole ala, "oh we forgot we were grew up together"

Hmm, didnt they say that the Guardian Forces affected memory? ;) apparantly using them makes you forget stuff, its menchoned a few places in the game, and that cowboy (Irvine Kinneas) mentions that when you get him, if my memory don't fail me. Its only Balamb Garden military acadamy that uses Guardian Forces because of the possible side effect, but to be a SeeD merchenary, those of the other schools go there for the Guardian Forces training.

Jajajajajajaja. I stopped the first video when they mentioned Shadow of Destiny as an example of good story. Seriosly, I really think at this point FF7 has more haters than fanboys.
By the way, just to make this clear, I don't like Dirge of Cerberus nor Crisis Core and I really hate that fail of a movie that is Advent Children.

Yes, I'm aaware of that, especially because they say "we forgot we grew up together because of GFs!"
The story would have had a lot more credibility if they left that one little bit out.
