hedwards: Not to side track, but did they compress that all to hell like they often do with remasters?

Dzsono: Hmmm, it happens sometimes, but I think the 2009 Beatles remasters were really well done. The remaster of Nevermind by Nirvana, on the other hand, was some of the worst over-compressed garbage I've ever heard. I think it's just the luck of the draw with these things.
The new Zappa remasters don't use compression at all, to my knowledge.
I buy CDs at the retailer and copy them into MP3. Gives me the advantage to be able to make them into a better format at some point (from the original CDs). :-)

Why don't you use FLAC or WAV?

Because they take lots of space.

But they sound much better and FLAC files aren't that big.

Can you show me a good converter then? Should also be able to do lossless OGG.
I buy cd's from iTunes. I burn a cd and I've been able to play it anywhere else I feel like it, and I don't own any other Apple products. I don't understand this "It only works on Apple" that I keep hearing about.

http://flac.sourceforge.net/

Lossless OGG is FLAC in OGG container.
--ogg When encoding, generate Ogg FLAC output instead of native FLAC. Ogg FLAC streams are FLAC streams wrapped in an Ogg transport layer. The resulting file should have an '.oga' extension and will still be decodable by flac.

Unless you're talking about Ogg Squish which is no longer maintained after Xiph.Org Foundation incorporated FLAC under their banner in 2003.
CD's online from where ever is cheapest, then rip them to play in my car or put on a mp3 player.
I still buy CDs. Pretty much exclusively. I'm a tactile kinda guy, I love coming home with a bunch of new CDs (hunter-gatherer, me), I love unwrapping them, I love looking at the artworks, turning the pages of the booklet while listening to it for the first time (especially if the artwork actually complements the music), I love the sight of a shelf packed with CDs. It's all a vital part of the experience to me which is lost when buying "naked" mp3s.

I've only bought digital twice: One was The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of NiggyTardust by Saul Williams because it was one of these "download free or support the artist by paying 5$" kind of things and since I liked it I thought it was worth the money. Also there was no CD release at the time, and seeing as Saul is nowhere near a big name like Radiohead, I wanted to show my appreciation for taking the considerable risk that came with that distribution model.

The other was Origin of Symmetry by Muse because I had a 5€ mp3 gift code from Amazon which I would have been stupid to let go to waste. The album was 4.99€ at the time so technically I didn't even buy it but got it for free...

Ever tried to squeeze over 600 lossless albums onto an iPod?

Just rip them in FLAC with Exact Audio Copy.
Amazon MP3 store. Yeah I've heard the rumors but it's convenient.

And CDs of course.

Expression Encoder for WMA Lossless if you have a Windows system.

EDIT: Misread, never mind.

Then what did they do, exactly?

They went back to the masters. The old editions used lots of reverb and compression. The new versions don't. Nobody seems how Zappa managed to make the old versions sound so bad. And this is not propaganda, like the "improved" deep purple remasters.
