Nowhere, unfortunately. The only legal way of obtaining them is eBay and other second-hand outlets. In this case, I would not think it immoral to pirate them -- but you have to decide that for yourself.

The games are not prohibitively expensive to buy used though. They would cost less than a new game at least. Getting an unused copy, now that is expensive (expect to pay in the region of 150€ for each game)

Do a search for System Shock portable.

It seems to be the best way you can experience the first game on modern systems.

Have a dig through the cheap bins in the local game shops. Both SS1 and SS2 were on budget labels at one stage

I would recommend keeping an eye out for used copy of the games if you truly want to play them.

Try pawnbrokers and op shops... Got the 2nd one at a pawnbroker for $2 although it had a weird smell >.>

It is not freeware as the original resources used to power the game (System Shock) are still owned by their respective owners. Freedoom is freeware as it uses 100% original content while using the source code of a game which was released under the GPL.

Maybe abandonware is the correct term, here. Looking Glass folded in 2000 and publisher Origin in 2004. The website's disclaimer from 2007 welcomes any relevant copyrights to be presented, with a promise of removal of content.

Once I get around to it, I'll likely be reviving my old Korean-English SS2 giveaway (it's a Korean release of SS2, which to my knowledge is still in English) which no one seemed to notice the first time around. Ah well.

Correct, the usage of the word 'freeware' only applies when there is indisputable proof that the right holders have granted free distribution of the game files. If System Shock was to go down the route of Doom, you'd be looking at the release of source code which does not equal freeware as certain aspects of the code are copyrighted and you need the IWAD files to run them, hence why Freedoom can be distributed for free, it's a non-commercial IWAD.
