How old should a game be before it is considered old enough for this site?
It is my personal opinion that games should be at least 3 years or older. My opinion aside, what does the community think? I'd like to know.
Following that should there be a "passing grade" that makes a game good enough to appear here? I understand that the site is new but should the GOG team maintain a certain standard to ensure quality old games are sold and not just some pieces of software that some company thinks that it can make a few extra dollars on.
Your opinions please.
I think GOG hosted games should have an average rating of at least 70% on some review aggregator and be at least 5 years old....although 3 years old seems reasonable too.
I guess I'm expecting to see games from the 90s and maybe early 00's.
Well, the primary objective is to make titles, which are hard or impossible to get available here, right? Those games are probably at least 3 years old, in my opinion.
Windows Vista (and XP) compatibility is also an issue. While most old games run on XP, running them under Vista can be a real challange. If a game is less then 3 years old though, there is a good chance, that you can get it to run under Vista, and generally, games made for XP are as well (you have to struggle a lot sometimes though...). So this also is 3-4 years (for now).
There is the case, when a game was terribly underrated, for some reason, and disappeared from everywhere. These games are sometimes very good, and even if they are not old, they might be worth uploading here.
All in all, I agree with the 3 years, but of course, there are exceptions. (Though I was shocked to see that someone put Half-Life 2 on the wishlist...)
In my personal opinion, 'OLD' doesn't necessarily have to mean that a certain amount has passed, but that it is a good game in the spirit of older games.
Kind of like being one of the "good old boys."
Honestly, for me its Windows 95 and below.
I don't think games that are one year old to be that hard to find, nor games that are 3 years old. Not only that but it would be hard to have publishers release games that are so new, and sell them for so cheap. There are a few game trading sites aorund to make getting a newer game just the cost of postage, so I don't see a need to have them in a site dedicated to old games.
What attracted me to this site was the hope that I can run old 80's and 90's DOS games on XP with an easy click. I really hope we do not see newer games here. I think it would go against what the site is.
I don't think you can set a hard age for the games here. I think as long as the game is no longer in print it should be fair game for consideration. Of course most good games enjoy fairly long runs in print so many of the games here would be 5 years old at least... Most games that have short runs have those short runs for a reason... though there are always exceptions.
I would say games that came out before 2002... i.e. 6 years or older.
Is "out of print" the same as saying no longer supported (with patch updates, etc.)?

Depends on your definition of old. What I'm really looking for on this site are older games that hard to find in most retail stores. If I'm looking for a older game that I can't find in a store or online threw some distribution service then I should be able to find it here.
Well im not sure what the exact standard should be in years, i'll leave that up for GOG.... BUT, I do believe that this is the perfect way to set up somewhere to download games that are hard or even impossible to come by. Mostly that makes old games but not always..
However, It is driving me nuts seeing not particularly bright people filling up the wish list with reasonably new games like Half Life 2? and Shadow of chernobyl. These games are still available in stores!!! Also many somewhat recent (but old in gaming time) games are available for download through many avenues like, steam, Xbox, Wii and many others.
The Brilliant thing about GOG is that it gives not only the PC a platform to find old out of production games on but classic ones that no one else bothers with because they assume they have no market value. These games had market value then and still do now. My friends and I were laughing about playing the original micro machines on pc all those years ago. I would install it again now if i still had it but it wouldnt work on my vista 64 bit system. Thats also the beauty in GOG they make it work first.
Again I dont know if you can narrow it down to a year but i wish that people would stop hounding for newish games and let GOG get to uploading Ravenloft games like stone prophet and some great oldies!!!
I'm happy to have any and all games on here. I think the name choice was kinda dumb...
Several of the games on here got bad reviews... and yet all of them have some big fans. The great thing about GOG is that its EASY and CHEAP. So if i fancy just trying a game that i might not have risked £40 for, I can pick it up for £3 and give it a try. Maybe i'll hate it.. but i'd like the option to try it.
The problem with review aggregation like on gamerankings is that it can disguise some great games. Check out a few Wii games on there... they'll probably have a few 80%/90% scores and a few 30% scores. So the average is 55%... but that doesn't really tell us anything.
There are quite a few games that weren't well received at launch, which have developed strong cult followings... it'd be nice to get a chance to try them.
As long as I have ratings and reviews on the site to guide me, i'm happy to have any old game on here. New or old. Good or bad.
Give unwanted games a second chance...

I suggested Shadow of Chernobyl because in my area it is hard to find, and also when I got my copy, I got it for ten bucks, so I figured it'd be alright, especially because there are games currently available that are fairly recent.

A lot of THQ's back catalogue is going to Stardock's Impulse, BTW.
And yep, that does include STALKER: SOC.
And Titan Quest + expansion, Company of Heroes + Opposing Fronts, Full Spectrum Warrior + Ten Hammers, Red Faction 1 and 2, just to name a few....

It doesn't really bother me how old a game on here is (though I think the majority of games should be from the 90s overall as that was the golden age of PC adventure gaming). What does concern me is that they are GOOD games, and should have had an average review score upon their release of at least 70%.
