And did anyway else notice the little "Scratch 'N Sniff" promo on the cover for Leather Goddesses Of Phobos? I'm not sure I want to know what I'd be smelling, there.

I'd like to note that while some of the covers of these games are terrible, the games themselves can be pretty awesome. Megaman 2 is the best example, and Leather Goddesses of Phobos was hilarious.
Capcom's Megaman team just has issues with covers. They didn't get it *quite* right until Megaman 6 or so.

Meh, it actually doesn't strike me as too bad. Chess isn't really reknown for edge-of-your-seat action, but rather as a thinking game, one of strategy. It does fit the timer period quite well.

It's called Cho Aniki (or Ai Cho Aniki) and it's on Neo Geo. I've seen it in an episode of Push Start (Push-Start.be).
It's a shoot'em up. Those guys float and shoot beams from the top of their head.
If you understand French (preferably), go watch Push Start episode 11 which features ingame footage with commentaries. If you don't, you can see it on youtube and check out the devious graphics of the game for yourself.

I don't think Planetfall cover qualifies although it does not match the game that well. However, I have a strong suspicion that that box became an inspiration for Space Quest ;)
