I'm really just an old time Quaker... for me this game represents everything that's missing in modern games. A versatile engine. Great support from the developers including an Open Source release of the whole freaking engine! A vibrant community that has created everything from simple maps to entirely different games (racing, chess, snowboarding, space combat, you name it, Quake has it). A developer who talks about how things are working and why they were designed in that way.
id back then designed their games to work forever, to improve over time. They didn't want people to play it once and then throw it away so that they would buy the next game, which seems to be what many developers are aiming for today. Today, replayability is often seen as a weakness.
