keeveek: I don't want more shitty games in GOG catalogue, so Painkiller sequels are off limits. They specifically told me they don't wanna upset me with shitty Painkiller sequels so they won't be released. ever.
and yet we now have hotline Miami >.>

Ubivis: Hmm, you are free to set up your deck as you like, it has a proper adventure mode, where you have to earn the cards you can use, and it has some nice tournament functions. What else did you miss? There were a few card bugs, but all of them have been corrected with the fan patch :)

hedwards: I still have a copy, perhaps I'll give it another chance. I hated the way that I would get creamed early on in the game before I had enough decent cards with which to protect myself. And I seemed to routinely run into hard adversaries from pretty much the start of the game.

Compared with Dual of the Planeswalker, I just didn't like it at all.
The one you're talking about was Duels of the Planeswalkers wasn't it? The recent ones were just named after it.

EDIT: Oh no, apparently Duels of the Planeswalkers was the 'gold edition' of the Microprose one.

There were more Painkiller games?

SpooferJahk: There were more Painkiller games?
Yes, unfortunately. They were increasingly awful in every way. Some of the later ones were just half-assed fan mods that got an official title slapped on them with almost no official work (or QA) done on them whatsoever. They're really genuinely terrible, especially compared to the original game.

Heck, I even thought Battle out of Hell was mediocre, but at least that one's playable and has a couple of cool levels.
The only way I'd ever buy any of those, is if they were cheap as fuck.

Like, $2.

I am aware, just never bothered with them based on the reception of them alone though I might give Overdose a shot one of these days. I have to agree with Battle Out of Hell being mediocre, I hated playing through it with my copy of Painkiller Black.

The old one was Shandalar, and that was a pretty bad game in my opinion. The Duel of the Planeswalker from 2010 was a much, much better game.

Even for somebody who had played MTG quite a bit, Shandalar was a complete waste. There was no multiplayer that I remember and the single player campaign was hampered by a lack of cards early on and requirements that you ante up for each duel.

Meaning that you'd have crap cards and things would go from bad to worse if you started on a losing streak. Which isn't a feature that I typically associate with good game design. Certainly not for a game that would take as long as this to play. It's fine in other genre where you're just talking about a single mission out of a campaign. Not where the entire campaign starts to go south because of bad luck.

I just meant Duels of the Planeswalkers is not the 2010 game, it's from 1998. As I said, it's the 'gold edition' of Shandalar.

Looks like Duels of the Planeswalkers to me. And they are completely different from the Microprose crap game. I know, I own both of them. Well, I own the newer one and my cousin has yet to reclaim the older version. I'm not sure he misses it any more than I want to play it again.

It's a bit like comparing Wolfenstein 3D with Return to Castle Wolfenstein and that mid noughties sequel. They're only loosely related.

EDIT: I get the distinct feeling that we're talking about different games. Because we were never talking about the Micropose gold edition until you brought it up.

Did you not look at the link? :P

Yes I know the game you're talking about, I even referred to it. I'm just saying, Duels of the Planeswalkers properly refers to the gold edition of the game you don't like.

If you basically said "I didn't like Shandalar, I much preferred DotP". Without specifying it looks like you're talking about the 1997 game vs the 1998 game.

That's what I've been trying to tell you. You didn't look at the link did you? :P

The gold edition of the Microprose game is and always was called Duels of the Planeswalkers. That is the game it looked like you were talking about, which is why you need to specify the new one.
