I'd suggest "Quest for Glory IV: Shadows of Darkness", a classic Sierra adventure game/RPG hybrid.
It's based on a little bit of Eastern European and Russian folklore, with plenty of other ghouls and ghosts thrown in.
Of course it does help if you've played the previous three games... but it isn't essential.
If you have the luck to get the CD version, you get some rather mixed quality voice acting. Of note is the narrator, as played by Jonathan Rhys-Davies, and Katrina as played by Jennifer Hale (in possibly her first game).
