Elmofongo: inb4 Tifa trumps them all.

Fomalhaut30: Eh, Tifa's a bit too...butch...for my tastes.
How about Rydia?

Fomalhaut30: If you have a PS2, then Persona 3 FES, Final Fantasy X, Final Fantasy VIII (shut up, Quistis is teh hawt), or Disgaea series.

If you have an Xbox 360, then Tales of Vesperia.

If you have a PS3, then Disgaea 3.

ellynandroid: Disgaea as an introduction to JRPGs? Sure it's an SRPG, but I wouldn't count it in the same category. Besides, it's tough as nails and grindy as a grainmill. I wouldn't make it an intro to anything, really.
But it's fun and funny to boot. It's a pretty good dissection of the whole JRPG trope, IMO. And sure, while it's grindy, it has the benefit of making every other combat system look good. You'll also get your money's worth in the length of the game.

Now, if one wanted to turn someone off of JRPGs completely, they'd suggest playing Star Ocean: The Last Hope.

Can barely remember her. That's SNES days.

Yeah, I agree with that (I do enjoy what I've played of those games), I just don't think they're appropriate as an introductory game to a genre they're only barely in. And I think a lot of the dissection of JRPG tropes would be lost on someone who hasn't played them before. ;)

Oh! I just thought of something else. Again, atypical, but the Mario & Luigi RPG series on GBA and DS are wonderful, Bowser's Inside in particular. Good fun, hilarious and brilliantly paced.

The other game I'd recommend to make people hate JRPGs forever is Lufia DS, but there are a lot of people who would disagree with me vehemently, so different strokes I suppose. :P
Final Fantasy 7. It sounds cliche, but it has the best opening of any jRPG, and the graphics are still presentable.

Also, no horrible voice acting.

Snickersnack: Opinions on Final Fantasy are all over the place. There's no continuity between games so there's a fair bit of rivalry between fan favorites.
Well most people agree that II kind of sucks. I would say it is still not bad and has some pretty unique ideas for its time. On PSP you can play FF I, II and IV as remakes, FF IV,V,VI,VII,VIII and IX via the PS1 versions on PSN but note that the PS1 versions of FF IV are considered as the worst ones because they have quite some loading times and they are still there on PSP and the PS1 version of V has a pretty awful translation.

McDon: I want to get into JRPGs but to be honest don't have a first clue where to start... What gave me this idea is getting my PSP working again which is meant to be one of the best consoles for JRPGS, so I might get FF1 for it... or should I get the remakes on the DS or a completely different series?
Don't get FF1. It's a historical curiosity, not a top JRPG by a long shot.

Lucky for you, one of the best JRPGs is for the PSP: Persona 3. It's fine for a beginner too (all JRPGs are). Having a PSP and not owning Persona 3 would be making yourself a disservice!
In psx I played Breath of Fire III -IV and Alundra. Was great games.
Xenogears, Chrono Cross.
I always liked final fantasy XIII! didn't get very far, so take that with a grain of salt.

Take this with your ketchup! I never played XIII 'cos it would require playstation 3.. Worst DRM ever.

clearly you havn't heard any of the rumors circulating about the planned DRM for playstation 4! it could be a bajillion times worse then anything you ever seen before!

If it is true.. it is some kind of high kick on the balls. "why is it that it is high kick if it is to the balls?" That's because I was on the elevator hearing about duke nukem pinball.

ashout: breath of death VII
and Cthulhu saves the world!
Another reason why I'm interested in JPRGs atm :D
avatar
Robette: He seems to want a game recommendation for PSP or DS... this is like everyone just started yelling as soon as they read "JRPG".
I made a list of consoles as people thought the same, any console will do

I started jRPG with Anachronox... and it kinda backfired. Also Penny Arcade games are quite good, if you like the webc.

Oh yes and of course freeware Shut up, Barkley and Jam: Gaiden. And there was some interesting jRPG about princess adventuring some... sex adventures. Ehm
