Bloodygoodgames: Weirdly, growing up and learning French, my favorite word was 'prestidigitateur' (magician in English). Thought it was so cool :) And never forgot it.
jamyskis: I (and most of my classmates, judging by the giggling then) used to find the French word 'piscine' funny because it sounded like 'pissen'.
Oh, the things you appreciate when you're 11 years old.
Oh, I remember piscine -- yep, I was 11 too :)
When I started teaching in Thailand, I asked my 12 year old students "Ham is meat from which animal - hamster, pig or goat?"
They fell around on the floor laughing, one laughing so hard he almost threw up and then managed to gurgle "Say again please".
So I did....and even more hilarity ensues.
Turns out, if you say 'ham' with a British accent (ie: not the American drawl") and say it in a low tone (Thai is a tonal language), it's Thai slang for 'penis'.
Yep. 12 year old boys find that hilarious :)
