Thanks for the tip. I promised myself to stay away from KS until a couple of gaming projects deliver but this looks very tempting. Reminder is set; I'll see if it needs a push forward later. :)

I confess never played a game of this series, I guess I must install my copy of Deadly Games which GOG give free a good time ago to see if I like the gameplay before decides to pledge (I saw the $50 tier includes the 2 first games too...)
They want to be on GOG too

"DRM free? Really?

Yes. We plan to release the game on platforms such as Good old Games in addition to Steam. For updates or additional free content, each version will get its very own update on all distribution platforms."

Saw it, though the fact that they use Good old Games instead of GOG doesn't fill me with confidence.
On the other hand, if they do sign an agreement, that means Space Hulk as well :D

tarohilt: Shadowrun was already sketchy when they also got money from shadowrun online.

ET3D: Shadowrun Returns and Shadowrun Online are made by two different companies.

As for the decision to go with Steam, I understand the technical reasons for the decision, but I can see how this rubs many backers the wrong way.

Zolgar: As for the taking a loss bit, I wasn't talking 100% about only digital services. I know a lot of artists of many different types. I routinely talk to authors, musicians, sculptors, a machinist, artists (I still find it funny that people who draw pictures are just called artists), dancers, fire performers, costumers.. and the one thing most of them agree on, is that you never sell yourself too cheap, because that makes people expect you to always be that cheap.
avatar
ET3D: For physical you have a per-unit cost which needs to be offset, be that for materials or for time invested. For digital it's very different. If you lower your price 10-fold and as a result 20 times the people buy it, you've got a net gain.

Here's a quote from this article from Smashwords:

"One surprise, however, was that we found $2.99 books, on average, netted the authors more earnings (profit per unit, multiplied by units sold) than books priced at $6.99 and above. When we look at the $2.99 price point compared to $9.99, $2.99 earns the author slightly more, yet gains the author about four times as many readers. $2.99 ebooks earned the authors six times as many readers than books priced over $10.|
Just a random note on this I found recently.. the publisher dad used.. doesn't allow him to set the price of his own books. They dictate the price of the ebook copies through major retailers (where the traffic is). :(

Thanks for following up on this. I hope that he gets at least a decent percentage of profits and that the publisher isn't keeping most of the money. And that there are enough sales for this to matter.
Ew, damn you, Kickstarter! The Realm Game backed. It looks really interesting but it might be first project I pull back. Creators recently expressed a possibility that it will be distributed DRM-only for non-backers which is something I don't want to support. I don't draw conclusions yet and rather wait for more information.

Disappointing. I guess I'll be saving my money for someone else's project. =/ Thanks for the heads-up!

Good news. :) The creator replied:
Hi everyone, having talking with Tom (our technical director) we are not planning on adding our own DRM to the game at all and that was never the case.
For backers we are not going to be distributing to you through Steam as we can just send you guys a link to the game to download, especially for those of you who have ordered the Beta as we'll need to be updating code and making changes etc as we go.
We are leaving potentially 20,000 copies DRM free out there in the net via the backers, so releasing a DRM version isn't going make any difference to piracy problems.
We're not making the game a Steam exclusive and so it will be available on other distribution platforms for PC.
However we will very likely use Steam as one of those distribution platforms as it is a great way to get the game out the public, and as a game maker that is the whole point. For as many people to be able to get the game and enjoy it as possible.
I hope that answers all the questions on DRM!

That means everyone should be able to receive an unrestricted copy of the game. I mean if The Realm Game reaches its funding goal which I hope so because it looks really promising. I'm not even sure I have played anything as a small girl.
