I really like Sim City 4. I haven't tried the newest Sim City, yet.

I also loved Stronghold, as mentioned above.

jjsimp: Civilization IV would count, right? It's an empire building game, but you do build cities.

HD melted. The pictures I had of the Loch Ness Monster on there can be replaced, but twenty hours of IceWind Dale, GONE. :(
Zeus is easily the top of the bunch, although it gets somewhat crowded up there. It's humor puts it a bit above the rest, I think.
Pharaoh: Cleopatra
Sim City SNES as it was the first one I played.
Zeus of course. I hope I'll get my hands on that Poseidon expansion one day. Also good to hear there's a widescreen patch.
Since most people will mention obvious city building games I will mention an obscure little gem game for PS2 console called "Metropolismania."

What so amazing about it? well, it's a city building game with 3rd person view. Rather than a top down view you're just simply a humble mayor/town developer who meet and greet the folks who moved to the area and meet their family members. You will listen to their demands and provide them with facilities. You will walk around and greet the townsfolk as your city grow and grow.

If you want to play it you can either pick it up for PS2 or you can always emulate it on your PC.
I don't know many city-builder games yet, only played Children of the Nile, Civ-City Rome and Imperium Romanum, but I like Civ City Rome the most, though Children of the Nile is also wonderful for it's nice little details of everyday life, like zooming in on women weaving cloth or children being taught to read and write.

Was it doing the grinding thing or did the circuit board on top go out?

The HD died, plain and simple.

I think it happened when my copilot and I decided to shut the computer down and while we were discussing doing that the computer read our lips and decided to act on it's own. :D

Real answer: I think it may have been overheating but who knows? You are talking to a tech moron times ten.
Probably not so much from a purely city building perspective, but I do love the newer Tropico games. Especially 4. From a purely city building perspective I'd say Sim City 4 Deluxe.
It found the Ark of Covenant and opened it.
My personal favorite is SSI/Stormfront's D&D Stronghold game. Not to be confused with the later, unrelated Stronghold series.

It was probably just the circuit board on it that went out then. Otherwise it would of sounded like a rock tumbler. The circuit boards can be replaced on those with a minimal of fuss. Just find a good tech or if you are willing to ship it I can take a look at it (free of charge). Try and get your save games off it.
