Chess is the greatest board game of all time.

I also have a soft spot for Sorry!, though I am not entirely sure why...
If card games count, Munchkin and all expansions.

If not, Afrika Corp. Not because it was that good but it was my introduction into "real" board games and I have not stopped since. So, it will always hold that place in my heart. Not to mention it was always fun to have my panzers roll over hapless british armor. Sorry... Armour... :)
pretty ordinary here..risk and monopoly

Actually, I would recommend against this, unless you play with the right "crowd". Munchkin has a tendency of dragging on for too long, as it is too easy to prevent a player nearing level 10 from reaching that level, unless that player gets lucky, and it also has an inherent "meanness" factor that makes some people uneasy. And finally, it is very joke dependent, so unless you get pen & paper RPG jokes+the subject of the particular Munchkin version, it might not be all that fun.
Though if you play with the right kind of people, it can be quite fun.

Also, far too many monopoly recommendations has been spotted in this thread. Monopoly is an old game, and it has aged really poorly. If you are not familiar with modern board games, then you might not be able to spot the obvious flaws in it (and the same is true for Risk), but for anyone who has some experience with modern games, the huge flaws of Monopoly just becomes painful. I would go so far as to say that by today's standards Monopoly is an objectively bad game.
And here is a good video to watch on the subject:

Allow me to be the first to say, he asked for "favorites" not best designed games. I dont think anyone on the surface of the globe feels Risk is a strategic masterpiece. But is fun to argue about who goes first and therefore win... And I will be damned if everyone doesnt want to be that snazzy open topped car on Broadway! Top Hat my @ss!

XYCat: I don't really play board games but i'd be interested in playing some so i'll use this opportunity to ask a question :).

Does anyone play Arkham Horror or Vampire: prince of the city and would be willing to "review" these games a little? And what would you recommend as a fun game with not too short gametime for two or three players?
Others have already done a great job reviewing Arkham Horror, so I'll leave that.

As for a 2-3 player game...did you have any other specific requirements? Do you want somethng co-operative or competitive, for example?
Oh man how I hate Monopoly.. Such a boring and predictable game (whoever gets the most expensive city wins). I always wondered why it got so popular..

My toppers:
Basilica (2 player game, great interaction)
Samurai (simple and elegant, no luck involved)
7 wonders (city-building card game)
Ticket to Ride (don't know anybody that played it and didn't like it)
Carcassone

As a party game Saboteur is super fun (playable with 4-5, shines with >7 people). It's about tricking everyone else that you're not the saboteur, while sabotaging their moves:)

Since it's difficult for me sometimes to find opponents I'm recently into solitaire games (having fun with Field Commander Napoleon). I've seen that few of you praised Arkham Horror which I was eyeing for some time already. How is it in singleplayer mode?

My favorite 2-player game is without a doubt the Catan Card Game - it may say card game, but it still feels very much like a board game. It's the only other game in the Catan-verse that I actually care for. While I like to refer to it as a 2-player variant of Settlers, it does play a bit differently. Average play time once you know how to play is roughly 1-1&1/2 hours.

There are a good few expansions for this one, but as usual I don't care too much for them as I typically don't want the added complexity.

monopoly i always ask for my bills to be paid in th elowest currency caused havoc when i have all the 1's and 5's as only i am able to pay fine / rent to the correct amount people have to other players or give change makes the game very intresting people arguin if the can pay less as the dont have the correct fund so instead of 22 they pay 20 the people recieving insist on more.
One? Probably Carcassone. Though i love stuff like Cluedo, Arkham Horror, Talisman, 7 Wonders, Pandemic, Citadels or Touch of Evil, mostly the less intelectually demanging/adventure stuff. Hopefully Descent 2nd Edition will join the list soon [as soon as we get around to play it]. My friends prefer some heavier games, where turns turn to drag for hours, like Agricola, Eclipse or Steam, so yeah, sad panda. ;)
Arkham Horror
Elder Sign
Prophecy
Space Hulk: Death Angel
Blood Bowl: Team Manager
Warhammer: Invasion (if it counts).

You can see that I am a FFG fan in general.

klaymen: Blood Bowl: Team Manager
Hm. That one looks rather nice.

I always had some curiosity in Blood Bowl, but never bit the bullet on that one. As far as I can tell, it's always been one of Games Workshop's "cheaper" franchises. Well, maybe I'll give myself the actual 'board game' for a Christmas present this year.

I'd love to give the newest video game edition a try, but I'm afraid my lappie would choke a horrible death on it.

Elmofongo: So Dungeons and Dragons does not count?

AFnord: D&D is a roleplaying game, not a board game in the traditional sense.

Antimateria: no wait, hero quest was the best.

AFnord: HeroQuest is a childrens game though. Without the nostalgia goggles, it is hard for an adult to find a whole lot to enjoy in that game. Same with SpaceCruade, which was Game's Workshop's 40k version (HeroQuest takes place in the WHFB universe). Might be worth getting if you plan to play a game with an 7-14 year old kid though.
Well I played it when I was something like that age. =)

It doesn't really matter if it's cooperative or competitive, it's just that i don't expect to find too many board game enthusiasts among my friends so pretty much anything would do as long as it doesn't require too many players.
On the D&D v Heroquest definitions, I should remind people that there ARE D&D boardgames and this may have been what someone was referring to.
I really want to try Munchkin some time XD
