Just wondering if it is legal to do this and if so would we need to keep the music below a ceartain number of seconds and the file below a ceartain size.
Oh and if so what would be the best format to use.
Sorry should have also put 'game tune' in the post description

I did this a few years ago on another forum, and it was great fun - but we were all musicians, so we'd just make our own very short MIDI renditions from memory*... but I guess that's not viable here. For actual audio clips, I'd say definitely less than 5 seconds. Not for legal reasons, just because anything more would be absurdly easy.
*occasionally from BAD memory, which added an extra layer of fun ("okay, I'm guessing that's supposed to be the aria of sorrow clock tower, though it completely isn't")

IIRC fair use should extend to 30 seconds. Which is why places like iTunes only ever use 30 second long samples.

I have a couple of short game tunes i've made myself which is why i was querying it. Although i was refering to actual game music as well as remade renditions.
Does the forum support MP3 attachments?

No, AFAIK it supports only image formats, and only a few of those. I know that GIF, JPG and PNG are supported, but I'm pretty sure it won't let you attach an MP3 or WAV file.
How about some really bad 'A cappella' but only from memory. There are occasional songs in my head, but I'd have no idea what they are and where they are from.

A capella? Like with only text? Okay, here's the first few bars of the theme to one of my favourite arcade games
Ding ding dong, Ding ding dong, Ding ding ding ding dong
ding ding ding ding dong dong dong ding dong ding dong ding dong

I actually went out searching for what it could be, based on previous games you've mentioned. Then I realised what I was doing ;p
hehehe well its one of those distinctive tunes that you either love or hate but it has the ability to haunt your mind for decades. It's certainly done it to me...
If anyone does guess it, I really will be impressed
I can't believe I'm actually hazarding a guess here, but my immediate thought was "Jingle Bells"
Super Mario Bros.

"arcade" games.
Hmm, I'm going to take a wild shot in the dark and say it's Commando. The music in that game will absolutely haunt your mind for decades upon decades...
Nope, the tune is rather happy and jaunty
The game has a somewhat cartoonish look, definitely not trying to emulate reality. There were home conversions for virtually every system but it did originate in the arcades
...thinking thinking...
One of us has to guess it.
