DaCostaBR: I figure I'll give it a shot at the series. So which one is the best? And which is the most friendly? Remember, Steam has it's winter sale in a couple of weeks so Gothic 1 and 4 are not out of the picture if you want to recommend one of those.
Arcania: "Gothic 4" (finger quotes) plays quite differently to Gothic 1 - 3, so I wouldn't recommend it as the first you play. I'd say play Gothic 1 - 3 in order (mostly for the storyline to make more sense, but also so that you'll appreciate the improvements made between the games), then play Risen and its sequel.

keeveek: Oh... I just "love" German immersion breaking "humour" ...
And what's with rock band placement in RPG German Games? Sacred 2 also had this "joke" ...
Well, it's a medieval folk band, so it's not really out of place in a medieval world. I don't think it brakes immersion too much (I only wonder where they came from and where they go after the concert...). And what's with rock band placement in RPG German Games? Sacred 2 also had this "joke" ...
And to my knowledge, it's not the GOG version that doesn't feature the In Extremo concert, but both the international release in general as well as later German releases, because they just wouldn't bother trying to get the license for the song again.

I've played (and own) Gothic 1-3 and also forsaken gods.
From those i'd say Gothic 3 is the easiest in terms of gameplay. Gothic 2 was extremely difficult for me.
I didn't manage to complete any of them, but with 1 and 3 i got near the end. Enough to watch the last hour or so on youtube to finish my understanding of the story.
To be honest, Gothic is more about exploring, doing quests, and leveling up.

I thought each game had it's own story like the Elder Scrolls series so it wouldn't matter where I started, but as it is I'm gonna start with Gothic 1.

Did they have electric guitars in medieval Germany? Oh, and I'm glad that isn't present in international release. I can't stand jokes as cheesy as this...
Crab warrior in Divine Divinity is enough... I know it's a Belgian game, but I'm sure it's the GERMAN part of Belgium... -.-

And also, it wasn't a joke but cross-promotion. PB added In Extremo, In Extremo put an ad for Gothic in their album.

It's quite the opposite, each game picks up exactly where the previous game left off. You play the same character throughout the entire series (except for Arcania(again, not a Gothic)) and there are several recurring NPC's.
