I'm looking to find a replacement for Kaspersky Internet Security software. The software is installed on a system belonging to a friend of the family. The software is a memory hog which is a problem on older systems.

What is the best free anti-virus currently available?

Thank you in advance for your input.
Avast.

, and [url=https://www.avira.com/]Avira are also valid options, but after having tried all three, I much prefer the above. Mostly due to it having a "gaming mode" where it shuts the f*ck up and doesn't throw messages and popups at you, hile the other two likes to throw ads in your face in order to get you to buy their paid products.

(Information is likely a bit out of date, as I haven't used the other two for a couple years.)

You have a choice of:

AVG
Comodo Internet Security
Avira AntiVir
Microsoft Security Essentials
Avast!

I use Comodo and haven't really had much of a problem with it, but it is very prone to false positives. MSE had less of a problem with false positives, but has let a couple of nasty ones through in the past with me, which is why I don't use it anymore.
Avast + MBAM
Good sense?

Common Sense is a valuable tool in keeping your system clean. However, this software would be installed on a system operated by someone who isn't very computer savvy.

They use an older system and Kaspersky is a memory hog. I'm looking for something that will keep the system secure and use less RAM.

My thanks to everyone who has replied so far.
I am fan of MSE. Started with it reluctantly about 2 years ago and can't see myself going back to Avast.
I know it ended quite poorly in some recent test, but it always stopped any viruses from infecting my PC, it doesn't bother me with any pop-ups and it doesn't eat much memory.

Hell, even Microsoft recommends using a third party antivirus and no longer even tries to keep MSE relevant.

I'm not 100% sure but I think I read about Avira dropping the ads.
I use MSE + common sense.

This post is so wrong for so many different reasons. :P
I would definitely use Avast - It's saved me from a couple viruses in the past, plus it's pretty resource-lite, so that makes it perfect for when you're gaming.

There's nothing wrong with MSE....
Common Sense 14.1 SP14 R6 Personal Worldwide Edition
According to AV comparative's test as of Dec, AVIRA or Avast seem to be your best bets, unless you want to pay for your anti-virus software. Avira seem to have been a little bit better in the Dec test, they tend to switch place between tests, meaning that they are roughly equal. So take whichever one you like the most.

AVG seem to be lagging behind quite badly, and don't even think of using Microsoft Security essentials as your main protection, as it scored really poorly (again).
