It's actually an oil conglomerate.

GOG is a web store that sells Digital Downloads of games with NO DRM at all.

GOG is Good Old Games

They supply the games from mid ninties till mid 2000 and a few newer titles. They sort these old games out to run on new versions of Windows and remove all the protection like Tages and Securom. When you purchase something from here it will go onto the shelf in your account, there will be 6 free games in there already. They also include all the fixes and patches so they are as up to date as possible, they also include community fixes where developers have just left the game. Old DOS games they pre configure Dosbox in their installer so the game is ready to go for you once installed.

You can literally download your games and they are yours to keep forever. You can back them up onto a disc if you want to and install them on however many machines that you own.

Here's what you need to do, OP.

Step1: Add a free game to your account
Step2: Download it
Step3: Install it
Step4: Start it up

After having done that, you should have a pretty good idea of what GOG is.

It's just GOG.com now. But yes, it "still" has mostly old games, for now :)

1) You create an account

2) you can buy games which are tied to your account

3) You can download those games and their extras as many times as you like (all you need is your login info)

4) The installs are stand-alone so you can install and run the games without needing anything (no CD, no internet, etc).

5) The games will run on a modern OS (see support OS for each game).

In my situation for example, I downloaded and installed some games on all my computers (I keep my old ones) and sometimes have my friends come over so that we can do LAN parties.

I have a backup of all my installers on an external hard drive (to save on bandwidth), but if my external hard drive broke down, I could re-download my installers from my GOG account.

I agree that's my main reason for being here :)

But I don't doubt that in the long run, classics will be a smaller and smaller percentage of the total games on this site. Although it'll be quite a while before it even gets close to 50-50 let alone less. But with the introduction of Indies (and there's a lot of those) there'll be more and more :)
