Fuzzyfireball: I can play Blood II for hours before it crashes, the trick is picking a low resolution and setting it to one core I think. Probably messing with the advanced options on the game.
I had i76 working almost perfectly, wobbly wheels gone and the flamethrower worked 90% of the time, but then I switched video cards and it flat out refuses to run now. I haven't completely troubleshooted it yet though.
And yeah, they'll never fix Blood II unless they want to release a version with a modified source code. It was even worse when the game released.
I'm not against GOG releasing picky and buggy games, but they should def put a warning on the game page.
hedwards: I think the problem in both cases is probably a buggy graphics implementation. I had the problems with Blood 2 only go away when I switched from nVidia to AMD for the graphics.
I guess I was being a bit dramatic as now that I remember if I turned off the graphics acceleration and lowered the screen to the minimum it would run fine for a while. But it's something that should have had a warning and unfortunately I don't know of any source ports for Blood2.
Lithtech has the ugliest Software mode ever, I avoid it at all costs. Also I say it works fine now, but it's so unpredictable, I bet if I tried to play it it would crash or something, I haven't tried it on this gfx card.. :S
I just remember setting the Client.exe and Blood2.exe to use one core and have matching compatibility options seemed to really reduce crashing. Then either picking your native resolution or a low resolution like 800x600 also helped. I was actually able to explore the levels and look around. It was nice.
Sometimes when the game crashed it would tell me it was due to a file located in the folder named AM18.dll. So I tried something out of curiosity. If you own Shogo, which uses the same engine but is MUCH more stable, you'll see that same file in the folder, so I backed up Blood 2's and replaced it with Shogo's. Never had a crash due to that file again. I believe that file is used for the music. Def something to try if you can.
I also fixed a weird crash where I'd sink into the ground and crash by doing a registry clean, which was just bizarre. Fucking game.
