I really hope there are more trolls than the real thing, because otherwise the world is full of moronic, idiotic, racist, sexist, dumb pe-...nah, not even people. And to say they're animals would be an offense to the animals :D

Not even a question of age, though we don't know it. If I remember well, he had admitted some fragility about these things, an issue like paranoia. I'd say the quality of the gog community is what leads to very minimal policing, and to some users feeling too secure and lowering their defenses too much, or raising there expectations too much. It's calm waters, but it's still water, and you gotta swim. And still expect to occasionally swallow the salt of abrasive comments and godawful metaphors.
