Gmr_Leon: Also, X3 can be acquired DRM free if you pick up a disc copy, it doesn't even require a disc check and some copies' keys are redeemable on Steam if you want a digital backup. (I say some, only because I don't know if this is the case with all, as I picked up X3: Gold Edition retail in hopes for a DRM free copy, which much to my pleasure it was.)
avatar
Magnitus: But basically, you can't have a digital DRM-free installer then right?
I guess not, in terms of purely digital. =/ However, you do get a DRM-free installer in the form of the disc, which is pretty decent in my book. Not ideal, maybe, but at least it's a local backup in the event of company shutdown/server failures.

real.geizterfahr: The X Superbox is completely DRM free* and contains X: Beyond the Frontier, X-Tension, X2, X3 Reunion and X3 Terran Conflict.

*The Superbox comes with an activation key to register the game on Egosoft's website, but that's 100% optional. And I think when Albion Prelude came out, they made this key Steam redeemable. But I'm not sure about that. However, the two X3 titles are available DRM free in the Superbox.

edit: Just saw this was already discussed... Note to myself: Read first, answer afterwards xP
But it's still tied to a DVD right? It's not a downloadable thing?

darkwolf777: You might check the Humble Store, I know they had a bundle a few months ago with most of the X games which I'm pretty sure were DRM free but also came with Steam keys if you wanted to activated them on Steam as well.
Holy cow, that is promising. Can't believe I missed that. Guess I'll be checking the Humble Store every once in a while then.

Until the DVD breaks, get stolen or my house burns down, though I suppose the later 2 would apply for backups on external drives too (unless I stored them at different places entirely).

Also, my DVD game collection was getting a bit out of hand in terms of storage. Not sure I'd want to go back to that.

Crewdroog: D3 as has been said by many. I just remember my brother and I being so f-ing excited about it coming out. I constantly kept checking the website for teases and art work blah blah blah. Then I found out about the online single player and I became one of those insane ranting people. I'll never buy the game for PC and that means something because I have clocked an insane amount of hours in D1 and 2.

On a separate note don't even get me started on the AH...

skeletonbow: I felt the same way about Spore for like a year and a half before it came out, watching all the video presentations on it etc. About a dozen friends felt the same too, foaming at the mouth for it. Then it came out loaded with crappy DRM and to date I know exactly _zero_ people that bought it, one friend that pirated it and played it for a few hours and uninstalled it and said he didn't care for it.

I've still never even seen the game in person this many years after the fact.
Oh spore that is another one. I forgot how I heard about the game.. But yeah so excited and bought it, but didn't realize you needed the Internet. At the time Internet was way to expensive for me. So disappointed. Eventually got to play the game and it wound up being ok. The only fun part was the creature creator.
I hope someone (mainly) from EA or Ubi reads this thread, maybe they'll come to their senses and see that it's not the pirates' fault for their lost sales, but their own.
Just to name a few:
SimCity (2013) AKA SimVillage
Skyrim
Starcraft 2
Diablo 3
Assassin Creed Series
Bioshock Infinite
Crysis 2
Crysis 3
Far Cry 3
Dragon Age 2
Thief 4
Wolfenstein
Dead Space
Rage
Any Clancy game after the first Ghost Recon
i never play a ubisoft games with uplay.... never!
I have a relatively stable internet connection and Steam hasn't given me much trouble so far, so I'm okay with buying Steam games (especially on sale).

However I won't buy anything that has limited activations if I know about it in advance (I did get tricked with Risen 1 because I didn't realize it had Tages on top of the Steam version, but that's since been removed and I got it again on GOG anyway just to be safe). I avoided games like Spore, and I got a cheap used copy of BioShock 1 on 360 in order to avoid the DRM on the PC version.

I haven't bought anything directly off of Origin, but I did activate a few games there. I wouldn't call it good, but it didn't give me any trouble either so it's not a deal-breaker if I really want a game from EA (although there isn't anything in particular that I'm looking forward to right now, aside from the Mirror's Edge prequel/reboot/whatever but only if that has similar platforming and controls as the first game).

U-play is a major pain the ass. Anything that has U-play in it automatically drops to the bargain bin no matter how badly I want it. I originally refused to buy U-play games at all when they introduced their constant-connection-for-single-player requirement in Assassin's Creed 2, but now that they've toned it down to a one-time activation requirement I'm willing to risk ~$5 and hope that the game works well for me.

And I generally tried to avoid GFWL as much as possible before although I did get a few that used it, but now that GFWL is in limbo I'm not buying any other games that have it. I skipped Bulletstorm and the PC version of Dark Souls for this reason.

And in general I avoid games that need online activation without specifying where it gets activated, or if it gets activated through Securom, Tages, etc. instead of Steam (I trust Steam to be around longer and give me less trouble, plus if it only activates through Steam then there's no installation limit).
Diablo III
but apparently it's terrible anyway.
Diablo 3 (as mentioned above it's not meant to be great anyway) and have all but avoided Steam exclusives for a long time now (though not simply because of DRM, but also Steam's atrocious level of service and willingness to happily put broken products on their digital shelves without recourse for refund. If GOG can provide refunds for DRM free games, Steam can definitely do it for games whose access they can [mostly] directly control). A specific example I can remember is Torchlight 2 but there are many others I can't remember for now.

Since I have joined GOG, I have not purchased a video game on any other store front. Therefore I have only bought drm-free games since summer of 2013.

GOG turned me back into a video game consumer in late 2012 (see larger explanation in main promo thread) due to DRM-free but I also opened up to embrace some of the bundles out there too and a little more than that as well. I'm still mostly DRM-free but not exclusively although I think with my backlog of both now my purchasing habits will likely slow down overall and lean even more strongly to DRM-free going forward too as the bundles and other deals for Steam out there are appealing less and less to me now that I got most of the games I ever wanted from years gone by, and 99% of the games coming out on Steam are all indie platformers and RPG clones and retro 8 bit NES games none of which appeal to me the slightest.

Soon I'll probably just be a holdout here waiting for LucasArts and a few others to wake up and show up with their DRM-free wares... :)

For me, it's not an issue of what's available here as opposed to other stores. I played primarily on a console growing up, so most of these games are new to me regardless of their age. I also live quite a busy life as a graduate student, so I don't keep up with newer releases or anything gaming related.

I do in fact like how hassle free gaming is with GOG as opposed to other stores. It's simply just install and play, with no need for a third party account such as a stardock or runic account. Plus the games normally come with every expansion or dlc released in a single package, with a single price. I find that to be very appealing.

So for me, I just have no interest in other stores.

Yeah, GOG is the epitome of hassle-free. Some games require a key for online multiplayer but they're few. Either way GOG is certainly the best easy-button out there overall.
For me it's anything that requires Steam, G4WL Origin or UPlay to install or play

though I did get hornswoggled into getting one Steamed game (Front mission Evolved) when Amazon didn't list Steam as a requirement & Square Enix hid it as well. & dumbly thought "How bad could it be?" when the disc came in

that one "purchase" is still my biggest regret & it changed me from just quietly avoiding Steam to becoming quite vocal about it

Just Diablo 3. Always online for singleplayer is my line in the sand.

This included some Ubisoft games for a short while, but they stopped doing that and patched it out of the games I cared about, so I finally bought them.
