Storywise? So you're looking for a space opera? Advent Rising, probably Outcast (though I haven't yet played it).

If you see anything with a space background, it's probably a space opera.

Alpha protocol is quite similar to mass effect mechanic-wise, and ihmo superior in the chracter/story department.

Here on gog you could try out Advent rising.

Yeah, Alpha Protocol and The Witcher 2 are what immediately popped into my mind. Even Deus Ex Invisible War to some extent.
