I was wondering if that countdown on the main page is just for the Recommended and Community Deals or the whole list of games.

How long is the sale gonna last?

That countdown is for the community and recommended deal, every 24h there will be 2 new deals (one recommende and one community).

Haven't seen till what date the winter sale will run but last year it went till the 3rd January if I remember correctly.

The countdown is the time left until the daily things change, so that includes the recommended deal, the community deal and presumably the "Our gift to you" offer.

All discounted games are going to be discounted until the end of December.
The countdown is just for the daily deals, like the "The big ones" and "Deep in dungeons" promo.

I don't think much checking is done at all. My one is currently attempting to offer me Shadow Warrior at twice the current sale price.

Yeah, that "our gift to you" thing does not work particularly well at all. I think they could actually hinder what they are meant to do which is create another sale - there's a very real chance that of the three offers, perhaps only one could result in a sale to a particular customer, and if they choose one of the other two that sale is lost. Not very well thought-out.
