I work in the "lovely" fast food industry. Can't do this for much longer though. I'm really getting burnt out after these last four-and-a-half years. I'm definitely thinking of going back to school this Fall. Maybe college will finally stick this time; it'd be my third try.
I run a mailroom

Third try eh? What are you thinking of doing? What's been preventing you from graduating those other times?

LiquidOxygen80: I'm a manage/sous chef at a family owned and operated pub 'n' grub that specializes in barbecue, event caterings and a sort of hybrid atmosphere. From 11 AM to 10 PM, we operate much like any other restaurant, serving food for both dine-in, carry out and even delivery. (Crazy for a full service restaurant, I know.)

After 10 PM, the age of admittance is 21 or older only. We operate solely as a nightclub, with stuff like karaoke, live music, DJs, etc. The business has been operating in this fashion for about six years now and I've worked there for almost seven.

I started as a line cook/dishwasher, worked my way into a head cook's spot in about a month or two, learned pretty much every job in the kitchen, then was promoted to assistant manager (Night shift.) After proving my abilities in that function, they gave me day shift to run as my own, as the sole supervisor. I handle customers, do money, work inventory, help with caterings, open the building every morning I'm scheduled to work, cook food, prep, handle vendors, deal with petty cash and pay outs, etc. I'm a certified jack of all trades, working towards a MASTER OF ALL.

LiquidOxygen80: YOu know, Bruce Lee was a philosophy major as well. When asked about what he intended to do with it, he replied: "Think deep thoughts about finding a job."
Then... HE BECAME BRUCE LEE.

Nah I do not work in California :)

Titanium: The situation is so idiotic because I can't get a good job because I don't have the required experience but I can't get relevant experience if I don't work at that particular job for some time.
Ye, that's so sad, especially in the gaming industry. Everybody is looking for at least 3 years of experience, even for junior positions.

I'm the guy who fixes what you design.

Independent (self-employed) machine tech for the woodworking industry. Mechanical, computer, machine logic, troubleshooting, training, customer service, sales, marketing, and accounting all rolled into one. Never thought I'd end up here, but I love it.

So you're saying his designs suck? :D
Breathe in, breathe out. Forget, splutter, repeat.

Well, the first time was right after high school. I mainly just went because it was kind of expected of me, but I felt pretty listless about it all - I've never been big on school as is - so I didn't even make it through the first semester. After that (for some god-awful reason that still escapes me) I decided to join the Navy - right before 9/11, too. Doh! Fast-forward a few years and I'm going back to school. This time I lasted around a year longer than the first, but once again I started feeling like this wasn't going anywhere for me. At that point I decided I needed a change of scenery, so I moved to a different state, and I've been doing my crummy job ever since.

Yup, I need to get out of the current rut I've been in. I need to look at the course catalog of our community college again. As for what I'm going to study, it's probably going to be something more practical like business/administration. Not entirely sure yet.

Do you have a sense of direction of what you see yourself doing in a few years? And do you want to do business/admin just because they're practical and you think you can get a job out of it or because it's something you really want to do? You've already been stuck in this one crappy job, you don't want to spend all that time and money in school only to come out and do some other crap you hate.

I'd be happy if I had someone to fix things for me, I seem to end up out in the field (all over the world) doing the things you describe more than you might think.
I'm a programmer, mainly Java back end systems.

morecowbell24: I'm a poor college student majoring in something I hate (journalism) just in hopes that I can write about video games for a living (so I like journalism just not "normal" local, news, and politics journalism).

Vagabond: The best advice I got in school was to go what you were actually interested in. So I dropped computer science for philosophy.
I thought it was standard for Philosophy majors to study up on computers and get programming jobs? ;)

I'm currently earning my MSIS (Master of Science of Information Science) with a certificate in digital curation. I work in a Knowledge Management role for a biomedical research institute located at the university where I attend. It's a major public university, but I'm not comfortable saying which for a number of reasons--most of which have to do with the nature of my work. NIH funds my job.

When I get out, I want to assist with improving digital infrastructure for universities, cultural institutions, and hospitals in the developing world.

I used to work in a digital archive at another university.

Another random fact: I attended the University of Oulu, Finland for a short time. Finland is a lovely place.

Becoming a standard now, since programming is basically applied logic.
