(first of all, i should probably point out that i do enjoy old games, and that im not just some raging black ops fanboy. while i did enjoy black ops, i would pick secret of monkey island or red alert 2 over it any day.)

I have really enjoyed gog.com so far, i have only bought one game, but i plan on buying more. I am only 15 years old, and don't remember most of these games being released, but i am always willing to try something different. However, i don't really understand why people on here hate towards newer games. I mean, i consider both monkey island 1 and modern warfare 2 as some of my favorite single player games, and while they are both completely different, they are both great in their own ways. So, to sum it all up, i just wanted to ask you why you guys think that modern games are terrible, i mean, they are extremely different, but different doesn't necessarily mean bad.

People here don't hate new games, they just like good games, that's why their are here.
It is: Good old games after all.

I play a lot of new games, as well as old ones. I just ignore the shitty ones, which incidentally happen to be the horribly overhyped ones.

I don't think anyone here hates all new games, period. However, I do think that some people here (myself included) have issues with some of the general developments in the gaming industry over the past 10 years.

Some of these may include (but are not necessarily restricted to):
- Excessively restrictive DRM schemes
- Customer-unfriendly DLC policies
- Shorter games
- Poor singleplayer experiences
- Focus on graphics over gameplay

that is true about some games, but alot of games do try new stuff, the newly released portal 2 is a great example of that. it was even a huge change from the first portal.

I don't hate newer titles, but there really are not a whole lot of newer titles worth playing.

You're generalising a bit. I haven't encountered that many that have such a strong aversion to modern games. Most regulars here have seem to have Steam accounts too.

That said, a lot of newer games suffer from any number of the following problems that people consider detrimental:

- Very short campaign. 8 hours should be considered an absolute bare minimum for a single player campaign and that's not including repeated attempts due to dying
- Dumbed down to reach as large an audience as possible
- Game designed to accommodate the slow reactions, limited bindings and inaccuracy of controllers
- Controls screwed up in other ways, like not letting you fully use the keyboard
- Extreme linearity and non-interactivity, including too many cut scenes
- Stupid DRM designed to make you feel like a mug for not pirating the game
- Quick time events

1: yeah, i am fine with steams drm, and i dont mind disc checks, but anything other then that gets annoying.
2: yeah, i really dont like it how games tend to focus on long multiplayer over long singleplayer.
3: i rarely experience this one, actually. some games do come to mind though.
4: (COUGHcrysisCOUGH) :P yeah, this one 6th grade kid was bragging about how he beat the "insanely hard" bioshock 2 -_-

I bought Modern Warfare 2 even though it was a morally reprehensible purchase, and enjoyed it for quite some time. But there aren't many great games coming out that I see. Bad Company 2 is the best multiplayer shooter there has been in some time, from my point of view. Fantastic. Maybe Battlefield 3 will be great, I'll pick it up day one because I trust the developers. Dirt 2, although not as recent now, is an amazing racing game, and might be one of my favorite games of all time. I am truly pumped for Dirt 3. Arkham City will almost surely be amazing. Mass Effect 3 is on the way.

There are some good games out there being released currently. And I think most of the people here hate the trends listed by Wishbone, and associate them with the modern market in general. So it's understandable when someone speaks out against the market in general.

If you are able to separate your opinion of the market and some of the better games being released, there is some truly great material coming out. Not a hell of a lot, but games are certainly doing fine in my book.

Personally I prefer old games over new games because of their system requirements. My so called "gaming rig" is some HP Probook with Intel chip graphics that won't take me any further than 2002. That's why GOG is such a goldmine for me.

Maybe i have seen the wrong people, but they definitely didn't like modern games.
