In a somewhat particular order:

Fallout 1 + 2
Planescape: Torment
Arcanum
The Witcher 1 + 2
Baldurs Gate 1 + 2
Betrayal at Krondor
Gothic 2
Arx Fatalis
Anachronox
Stonekeep
In no order:
-Baldur's Gate
-Baldur's Gate 2
-Torment
-Neverwinter Nights
-Arx Fatalis
-Ultima Underworld 1 + 2
- Might and Magic: World of Xeen
-Fallout
-Gothic 2
- The Witcher 2
What? No love for Might&Magic 8?

Lexor: Well, if i would be lucky enough to buy Legend of Grimrock in some future I will play it hard mode / without automap. Automapping is just too easy :D

hercufles: Lol my map making skills are crap and since the old games the areas look the same mostly, thats the bad thing of corridor rpg's
A cartographer I am not but I admire the hardcore who are. Either I can manage by muddling through lost at times or maybe a given game is just a wee bit too hardcore for me nowadays. I don't mind taking notes though and maybe some simple drawings I guess.

By the way, the suggestions here are so good I wouldn't have anything to add really except that if it hasn't been mentioned and I missed it, I have heard Lands of Lore is excellent for an old RPG.

Crosmando: What? No love for Might&Magic 8?
It's ok for a runaround, but it barely got finished and it shows.. I enjoyed it, but as no more than a distraction, I'd say the same about Wizardry 8 too, and dark Messiah of M & M is fun.

but I really would have a hard time holding any of them up as an example of excellence.
[edit] Oh, misread it.

Barry_Woodward: Other than Dungeon Master and Lands Of Lore, I've never played a CRPG. Which 10 would you personally recommend?
I'll suggest something "similar" to those, not the Ultima 7 and Interplay RPGs that everyone else will mention:

Ultima Underworld 1-2, and maybe Arx Fatalis.

If you liked Dungeon Master and Lands of Lore (and why not also Eye of the Beholder series), I always considered Ultima Underworld games as the major evolution of those games. Same idea, but it left behind the square semi-realtime movement. The next generation of Dungeon Master games if you will.

In the same vein, maybe even Might & Magic 6-8 which I enjoyed quite a lot. Not sure about 9 yet, barely played it and I've heard lots of bad things about it.

Yeah it was an impoved eye of the beholder game. And it had an automap, but i can be as easy or diffecult how you made it by doing some aras first and then the other one later could make or break your playtrough.
