Nirth: Not really if you know what parts to purchase.

As for the graphics, I don't really care but what made GTA IV unplayable for me was the ridiculous performance and not to mention steam, GFWL, SecuROM DRM and Social Club. Ugh..

I had some fun with Vice City though.
Now that's a LOT of DRM!

How about 1982-1992? Mostly text or black and white images (e.g. Mystery House) to 256 color VGA. Pretty slick!

;)

mrking58: Vice City looked ugly 10 years ago. Some of the big names games back then looked great

Elmofongo: Makes me wonder why the ps2 GTA games had ugly graphics models while other PS2 games like ICO/Shadow of the Colossus, Silent Hill, Metal Gear Solid and Resident Evil Outbreak and Final Fantasy look stunnig.
I think it's because the GTA games are open world, with quite a bit of stuff going on at any one time.
I think they both look meh. Maybe it's because my eyesight's deteriorating at an astonishing rate, but I've never cared for graphics much. I did have fun playing Vice City though. I'd give more GTA's a try if they weren't a complete DRM clusterfuck.
The graphics debate depends on detail versus raw textures and the like. GTA4 concentrated more on building an incredibly detailed city than it did raw texture power or facial animation.

I expect GTA5 to look amazing when it finally comes to PC.
I still don't have the proper equjpment to play IV. =L
I reinstalled GTA Vice city last week and did think that the game had aged a lot but one thing that didnt age was the music as it was already retro when released :)

It is amazing how much things have changed in a decade although you could say the same between 90s 3d games being flat polygons at the start of the decade such as midwinter 2 and then look at 3d at end of the decade with texture mapped graphics. Game graphics seem toa dvance a lot in ten years.
GTA titles always had outdated graphics.

And , as usual, GTA 4 mods look better than GTAV previews.

But in open world games, a little uglier graphics doesn't change a thing.

I thought that back in the older days when I played GTA 3 with PS2, it looked pretty great.

And with GTA 4, mods never installed right, game didn't start. But after Saints row 3, I don't think that I'm gonna never install it again, it wasn't so fun game that I would bother for a millionth time. Even though I never finished those episodes.

Psah! The first GTA game was released mere five (5) years before GTA Vice City, in 1997, and see how it looked like:

Not to mention its gameplay sucks too compared to the 3D GTA games, including GTA3 (2001).
Hey guys, remember how Every Elder scrolls game released at one point in time always used cutting edge technology and was the pinnacle of graphical capabilities in gaming?

Yeah?

I do

we went from "Graphics get better in time" to "Graphics get better only when new consoles release"
Not the biggest fan of gta, loved vice city, hated gta IV but to be honest i thought vice city (and gta 3) looked amazing back in the day when it came out on pc. Sure it didn't look as good as some of the games mentioned here but none of them were open world games...

I don't even like open world games that much but i can appreciate what they had to do to make the game playable with decent graphics...

Gta V seems to be a lot less serious and a lot more fun then gta IV (a bit like vice city) but time will tell.

Elmofongo: It can't because GTA 5 was made for consoles first. As always PC games always have superior graphics, even though its expensive as fuck.
If you demand the very best out of your PC, then yes, it will be expensive, but as long as you settle with "good", then it really won't be, not in comparison to a new console.

And we just got a nice comparison added to a local store's site. PS4 console: 7000sek (release: 2013). For 5000-6000sek you'll get a PC a PC that will last you through a console generation, and still feel powerful enough at the end of it.

And it would at least be fair to compare GTA5 to the console version of Battlefield 3, would it not? Or the latest Uncharted? And the animation quality in the GTA 5 video is just embarrassing.

Better than having to buy a new GPU or CPU or motherboard or all of that every 2 years.
