AFnord: But I guess someone who are used to those controls would have issues just jumping into a modern game.
I remember how much trouble I had getting used to mouselook in FPP games. I even said that it's inferior and stupid. :p
Well, I guess I get used to different control schemes easily then.

Elmofongo: Yeah I installed Daggerfall and THOSE CONTROLS ARE EVIL!!!

How did PC gamers played these games back then? and I placed GTA 3 on PS2 as the worse controls in video games ever.

Help me, help me Roman5 help me :(
you can edit the controls. did you at least try switching to mouse look?

Gazoinks: It's in DosBox, so you could rebind the keys. I don't remember what opens the rebinding window, though? F11?
I think it was f1 or something(only because I remember using f11 and f12 to change the cpu speed trying to fix that water movement glitch daggerfall gets with the wrong dosbox settings, but i'd have to check
(-edit its control+f1, just did)

but for daggerfall you don't even have to do that through dosbox its got a menu for it.

hit escape to get the pause screen. click controls. then you just click on what to change and type the new button....it was the first thing I did before I even went into the 2nd room of the pirate starter dungeon

Most PC games back then had shit controls so we were used to it. We are spoiled today. :)
I set mine up to play like a modern WASD FPS, within the game's option menu. It just took some rearranging of keys and setting the mouse mode to "View" in the mouse options. Here's a pic of my control layout. I don't even use turn right/left or slide.

You can set up the game to used the WASD keys and mouse for your control scheme so it plays like most modern first person games. It still takes some time to get used to but once you do, it turns out to be a pretty good game.

The controls are fine, you're just not used to them.

Daggerfall is the game that sold me on mouselook. It's unique setup allows it to use the neat 'mouse slashing' gestures. I wish more games would try this.

Modern mouselook was obscure in '96. Even Quake 1 required a console command to enable it.
In addition to the aforementioned mouselook mode, which is a must, you should also turn on the full screen view (F10) which hides the bottom button area so that the main view fills the whole screen. You can still access all of those functions with F1-F6 and various other keys (all of which are listed in the in-game control settings) so there's no downside to hiding it.

Many years ago, my friend and I played Elder Scrolls: Arena and for a good portion of the game never figured out how to use the sword and melee weapons. It was only when I read about Battlespire many, many years after ditching Arena did I finally understand this mouse slashing stuff that I don't ever want to see games adopt. :-p
My solution: wait for DaggerXL port / engine re-write to finally release (assuming it ever does).

I think you'll be singing a different tune when Black Marsh uses 'revolutionary' Kinect slashing gestures. ;-p

I for one can't wait to challenge Tiber Septim's wraith to a dance off!
