Ralackk: The only way we would get a solid failure rate figure is from microsoft but thats never going to happen. I can believe its fairly high though as I'm unfortunate enough to be on my 5th xbox 360 and I don't know a single person that hasn't had to send off at least 1 xbox for rrod repairs.

Even then though, With all stories of people's 360's failing and The bad internal hardware design; that's enough to turn me away from a 360. Plus they are in their 6th hardware revision, jasper, and I have not heard anything about it yet.
Certainly does sound like you've had more than your share of bad luck with them. Maybe you should have a look on ebay for a bargain on an Arcade, that way if they only last 6 months between repairs, you can cycle them and always have an active console
I don't use it enough to warrant buying a second one. Also the latest one I have now was the brand new edition at the time I got it so hopefully should have a much lower failure rate now then previous versions.

so you're planning to marry your ex-wife?
I can still boot up my old Genesis without fear of it melting down due to ham handed engineering. These new consoles are just a big joke.
Chinese lead products. =)

No they are just expected to do much more. They are expected to run games that come close to if not equal in some cases PC quality (its a generalization please dont flame me) while at the same time costing much less than a PC that would be required to run the same titles (once again, being general here). There are going to be bugs, it's inevitable. And while this doesnt excuse the fact that Microsoft hasnt fixed the problem after 3-4 years I can at least understand why it happens. And yes I have a 360 and yes it has red ringed on me...twice...and one disc drive error, but I will still defend it as a good platform for gaming.
It is sort of like complaining that modern computers are too loud and saying you could play diablo perfectly well and near silently on your P1 with an S3 Trio. BIT less work involved. MS themselves have admitted that they fucked up the initial run by cutting corners, hopefully they'll have learned their lesson by the time the next xbox rolls around

Nah its the LACK of lead thats the problem. Presumably they're using resin core solder and from my limited experience at using that, its shit

Ding ding ding... We have a winner!!!
Well there's been some new info released from a 3rd party warranty lot called SquareTrade that seems to indicate that 360 warranty claims have dramatically fallen in the last year
http://www.industrygamers.com/news/xbox-360-red-ring-of-death-abating/
The kotaku post that linked this said they'd never heard of the company but from the wikipedia page about them (last edited march 30), this was the same company that "released information regarding notably high failure rates for Xbox 360. The company found that the failure rate for the game system was 16.4% (almost 60% of the consoles that failed were due to general hardware failure, or the "Red Ring of Death"). "
The only interesting thing about this thread is the fact that it features a rare image of Weclock with a shirt on. It is currently the only known photograph with such content, as all discovered images of Weclock feature no shirt.
Good thing we can't see the rest of him in the photo, I have an unpleasant suspicion about what else he's wearing...
