We know our little game with closing down the site made some of you angry. Once again we'd like to apologize to everyone who felt deceived by us closing down GOG.com without any warning and without giving you access to your games. We apologize for that from the bottom of our hearts, it was done with the best of intentions and hopefully we can make it up to you!
That being said we'd like to introduce to you the brand new GOG.com. After two years we're finally leaving the beta stage and moving forward to provide you even better service with your favorite PC classics. Leaving beta means lots of changes to the site itself, as well. A sleek new design makes it even easier to browse through the huge catalog, share one's passion for classic games via popular social media, get to know more about the classic games available and recommend favorite titles to other gamers. Among other changes, the team has introduced GOGmixes, which are, in short, user-created lists of games around one theme. Learn more about all the new features on GOG.com overview page.
But that's not all. What anniversary would it be without some neat presents? We're celebrating the second anniversary with one of the biggest announcements ever for fans of classic PC games - we're reviving Baldur’s Gate and other classic Hasbro-Licensed PC games which will be unveiled gradually in the coming weeks!

If you do not have the funds to promote this was an ingenous way to spread word of mouth thru your customers. Whoever thought of this PR move was a genious. He needs a raise!

Still love you guys no matter what. Gamers for the gamers!

Welcome back!

Ok, let me say how I felt about that prank. I first found out about your supposed closure from Reddit where it was one of the hottest topics of the evening. I was shocked. One of the best DD services is closing down without notice. Then I actually visited gog.com and after reading the message I knew you are not simply shutting down the business. The way you wrote that statement made it clear, that you are taking down the website for some changes. You didn't, however, make it clear that it's just going out of beta. I started reading every single news article about GOG to find out what the industry thinks about this and what are the potential reasons. There were few options: a) you were going out of beta, b) CD Projekt was being taken over, c) you were going to introduce DRM or increase the prices. Takeover seemed very unlikely, especially because commentators mentioned Valve - it would be all over the news if that was the case. So there were 2 more options. End of DRM-free GOG or getting out of beta. Plain logic suggested that you won't introduce DRM - your main selling point. If you did, you would go bust in no time. So it's getting out of beta. While this stunt has generated attention you so desperately wanted I feel that you could have handled it much better. While your statements clearly indicated that you are not shutting down for good, you failed to provide more details that would calm down everyone and you failed to let existing users download their games in the meantime. I can't see a reason behind this. From a dev perspective you could just extract the account module used on the old gog and let it run till today.

Taking all of the above into account I can see how many people feel disappointed with this stunt. They feel cheated and made fun of. You need to understand that for us - GOGers - you are not just another corporation detacched from their client base. You are a friend and real friendsdon't play on emotions.

I love you dearly. I grew up in Poland and in the early days of my computer journey you were the only professional distributor out there. I bought my first legal game from you. Then whenever I bought a game I liked it always had your logo on a box. You were the first distributor to realize, that the only way to fight piracy is to offer a better product for a low price. You started distributing games with magazines (eg. Messiah) for pennies! And few years later you released The Witcher becoming the first internationaly recognizable polish developer and your product became an instant RPG classic. This, my dear CD Projekt, only confirmed that you are awesome. The way you supported (support?) The Witcher after release showed everyone developer how to treat their customers. I decided to apply for a programmer's position in your company. During the job interview your staff treated me with dignity and respect despite my (then) little experience. I could see that everyone enjoyed working for you. But I decided to move to London and try my luck there. A year later I found out about gog.com and quickly realized that the position I applied for was a gog developer! If only I knew what a fantastic service you are working on! I don't have much time to play nowadays but you will always be my number 1 choice for PC games. My affair with you, CD Projekt, goes on for 12 years already and I know I can trust you. I know you will not do a runner and always commit to deliver the best possible service. But like you probably know, friendships like ours take years to develop. One stupid mistake and it can all be ruined! Therefor I ask you not to repeat the same mistake again and treat your new international friends like you always treated me: fairly, friendly and with respect they deserve. This will make you more friends than a stunt like that.

And to all people pissed at GoG. Please forgive them, I guarantee you that their intentions were good. The outcome was quite different from what they expected but it doesn't mean that GoG is not trustworthy. We all mistakes and good friends forgive us.

TL;DR: GoG is awesome and trustworthy. Please continue using their service and let's put this PR stunt behind us. It was stupid but it shouldn't affect the way we look at this website.

First I have to say I'm really happy that GOG stays DRM free!

I'm not angry at all but i must say that if this really was a pr stunt and not something else going on, it was really stupid!
Trust is really important.

But this makes me like GOG.com even more as it is obvious that there isn't any marketing people in GOG yet.
I really dislike marketing people, I have more respect for lawyers, politicians and even journalists than any marketing people.
But since GOG.com is quite important I think you should hire one of those lowlifes... yes it is a dirty world out there.

The silly monk video was really funny, especially because of all the frustration, fear and anger people had felt up until this point :-)

I think all these people that gets really angry over this are overreacting. Like someone else here said, everybody makes mistakes.

I think it is fair to assume that this will never happen again. I'm sure CD project and their owners wasn't amused :-)

Even though GOG did hurt themselves, they have given all their users a valuable lesson. Any digital download service could be gone tomorrow. If it has DRM you could lose all your games. If it has no DRM you should backup all your games to more than one medium.

An alternative theory of what has just happened is that someone bought a large share of the company that owns CD Project and that they wanted GOG to change to a DRM model. The good folks at GOG.com and\or CD Project managed to convince the new shareholder(s) that such an idea would be folly and saved the day. If that is true they won an important battle. I do hope that it was just a foolish marketing stunt though.

Turrican26: In regards to your PR stunt, which only served to piss off THE SPECIFIC PEOPLE WHO CARE ABOUT YOUR SITE, I say fuck you guys. Fuck you from the bottom of my heart. If you care so little about your fans, I shan't waste another breath recommending your site to anyone I know.
Having said that, apology accepted. Happy to have you back, GOG.
Agree.
Welcome back GOG keep up the good work.
Regardless of what the PC doom-sayers keep posting, your stunt reignited my love of this site. When I thought I would lose my games, worse, any future games, I felt saddened. Now there is only joy. And Baldur's Gate.

Good luck with the new look site and may you bring back all the classics (Birth of the Federation please seeing as you've got the Hasbro deal!!)

Vestin: They needed to shut the site down because of the overhaul ANYWAY. It's not like they deliberately went offline just to annoy people - they simply tried to make the best use of the downtime they could.
Sorry but this is bullshit. Not a big deal doing the "overhaul" (i.e. setting up a new frontend) on a new / different server and than switch with a minimal or even no downtime at all. Happens all the time in other companies.

Whoever made this stupid pr stunt should give every customer a 10 dollar vouch for a free game. That would be a proper apologize.
Well said! :)
Man, reading this thread is like reading comments on Youtube video whenever they announce a new feature or a revamp of the Youtube site.

People just like to complain. In time they'll look back at this and see the funny side (And hopefully see how stupid they were to go I'M NEVER BUYING FROM GOG AGAIN BAAAAAAW).
I think the whole GoG team should be ashamed of what they have done. That's not the way to treat people, customers, faithful followers. People you should thank at least a bit for still being around after 2 years. You did know but didn't tell people, you stopped a service for your own needs. This is not the way to gain popularity and earn consideration, there's nothing earned here. You were doing well even without that and exploiting people feeling it's really bad. I don't think you should dismiss this case so easly with a tiny apologize. At least gift the whole catalogue to the current users, this won't be enough but a small sign of repentance. Jokes apart (but you did a serious thing) I don't think you should gain benefit from all this case. Rather this should became a source of loss. When I read the news I thought you didn't deserve to close down, now congratulation, you earned a little bit of that.
On the other hand, I'm glad you are still here. Promise you won't do that anymore.
Anyway as a site relaunch I would expect to see something palpable because what I see is nothing more of what was there before or at least are small not a proritary things.
Why don't you show something useful after 2 years and include localized version of all the game in your catalogue. Is it less easy than toying with people for a stupid pr stunt? Earn things the right way.
