Sometimes a game references some other work, usually as a little in joke to whoever gets it. Saying "you can't handle the truth!", "I am your father!", etc. is pretty blasé, but sometimes you see a reference that manages to actually surprise you.

For example, in Far Cry 3, while describing something, a character says: "It's spooky scary stuff. Like a werewolf Bar Mitzvah." I thought: "Wait. Like in 30 Rock? That's pretty damn specific. And now I'm kinda kicking myself for actually recognizing it."

Another one would be in Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines. You hack into the doctor files in a hospital and the profile for Doctor Robert reads: "Never lost a patient. No one can succeed like Doctor Robert." Like the Beatles' song. That one did put a big smile on my face.

Is there any such references that surprised you when you first saw them?

Played "Mars: War logs"
They made a reference to "I was an adventurer like you, but then I took an arrow to knee!"
Considering how cheesy that meme has become and considering that Mars: War logs is a science fiction it really caught me by surprise.
"Tass Times in Tone Town" had a nice Timothy Leary/LSD reference in it whenever you tried to eat one of the giant mushrooms.

One of the more daunting battles in Wizardry 8 takes place against a huge beast named 'Nessie'.
Hi, I'm Larry and this is my brother Darryl and my other brother Darryl. - In Baldur's Gate, it made my night when I saw it. (Newhart Show reference.)

AQW has the Knights of the Pactagonal Table (shaped like Pac Man). AQ has the fantastic Frogzard Hunter, by crikey. Basically anything by AE is just buried in references. (Seriously, it's like half of what the games are built on).

There were also tons and tons of them in CoX. It was one of the things that made it so much fun.

Let's see, I remember you had to rescue Mr. L. Jenkins a couple of times. (Once on the Hero side, and once on the Villain side I think.)

Then of course the fantastically devious ritual that must not be complete:
Wing Raider: We already know that the ritual begins with a jump to the left.
Dr. Frank N. Scott: I won't tell you a thing.
Assault Jump Bot: Yes, and then a step to the right.

Oh! Then the bit on Television's quest chain: "A strange test pattern flashes across the screen, establishing control over the horizontal and the vertical, then the screen returns to normal"

I think there was also a bit with a DeLorean but I can't remember now, and I don't have it written down.

Not a reference to anything but it was hilarious. In XCOM: Enemy Unknown if you read the Caution signs painted on things they are fantastic. "Caution: This device contains explosive materials. Do not expose to heat or pressure. Do not kick the device. Avoid manhandling and/or panhandling. Store in a cool, dry place."

Speaking of DeLorean's though, I did crack up when one of my soldiers stunned an alien and said "Awh yeah baby, 1.21 gigawatts!"

In NWN2 one of the drunken sailors outside the bar in Highcliff has a description saying something like "This sailor has a healthy fear of rusty razors." :D

I almost forgot, there is a sweet Fight Club reference in Warcraft 3.
Of course Sacred has hundreds but my favorite is the Friday The 13th "Jason" gear.

CoX is an acronym for what? It's not very conducive to Google searches.

I do appreciate the Drunken Sailor one though, in fact, I was listening to some sea shanties right now.

City of Heroes/City of Villains/Praetoria. City of Heroes (CoH) was a comic character MMORPG where you played a comic book hero. Later Cryptic Studios also released City of Villains (CoV) where you could play a villain. Then even later they added Praetoria which was this dystopian future Big Brother kind of society. Players could mingle from one side of the spectrum to the other (right before they decided to kill the game). Since CoH/CoV/P was rather long winded most people on the forums shortened it to CoX (City of Crossovers). Not that any of that matters now because it's gone and dead. :(
In Postal 2, during multiplayer, if you kill someone by burning them, it's called a "Tibetan Monk Experience" .
In a secret room in Alice: Madness Returns is a skeleton of Razputen "Raz" Aquato...

In Skyrim you can find a "Notched Pickaxe"

In Sim City 2000 there are many strange names on Neighbour cities, for example Rimmer, Lister and Cat's Corner

In Star Wars: the force unleashed you can find Jar Jar Binks frozen in Carbonite

Finally, not really a reference, but a really neat thing in Dead Space, WARNING *** Spoiler **** WARNING

If you take the first letter from the name of every level, it spells out "Nicole is dead”

*SPOILER ENDS ***
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in Shadow Warrior are pretty wild.
"Duke it out In D.C." the time machine you use is modeled after the time machine in "The Time Machine" the movie, not the book of course.
Dickbutt in Sanctum
Warcraft has loads of them. There's an amazing Zoolander reference in the goblin starter zone of WoW, there are a bunch of goblin supermodels with the guild tag <Ridiculously Good Looking> having a petrol/gasoline fight.
