If you claim yourself to be the next Garry Kasparov, you know what does it mean gambit or you just like to rack your brain playing chess, then you'll love this week's promo on GOG.com! Until Monday, August 3 at 11:59 p.m. EDT, we're giving everyone a 20% discount on all chess games available on GOG.com! Grab [url=http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/chessmaster_9000]Chessmaster 9000 for $7.99 while Battle Chess Special Edition and Combat Chess can be yours for only $4.79 each! It's not a bundle promotion, so you will receive the 20% discount if you buy one, two or all three games! Check the promo page for details.
I always prefer playing chess with real pieces and against a human opponent, but animated chess does sound kind of fun. Added the three titles to cart for now, will decide about it later. A nice promotion for the PC chess interested though. :)
I might pick up either battle or combat chess but I haven't played the game for years, so I'm not sure I'd even play it >_>
I've had a bit of a chess itch lately, so this is good timing.
I'm wondering though, which is the better game, battle chess, or combat chess? Not really much interest in Chessmaster, unless it's really standout.
Chessmaster 9000 is the only game in this promo worth getting, and BOY is it worth getting. Battle Chess has too poor AI to be interesting in the long run, all you get are some cool pieces and animations. Much of the same goes for combat chess, graphics are better but Chess games aren't meant to be made with fancy pants graphics, at least not when they're lacking in the actual chess department.
Chessmaster 9000 is a steal at 20% off though.
I just bought these as now seems as good a time as any to learn how to play Chess.
Nice Promo.
I have Chessmaster, but will consider one of the other titles for a giggle!
Cheers GOG!
Chessmaster's a good choice.
9000 doesn't compare to the more expensive Grandmaster Edition, and getting a LAN game going seems to be...broken*, but for $8 it's an excellent game to pick up.
Chess rules.
*Sadly the only reason I bought 9000 after already owning the G.E. was to play LAN with my pah when visiting, but it just REFUSES. TO. WORK.
Oh how I wish GOG had the Grandmaster Edition of Chessmaster. =/

Thirded.
But, I picked up 9000 anyway.

Wouldn't the prospect of playing a LAN game indicate that the two of you could just sit at an actual chess set?
Or are you talking about using something like Hamachi to make LAN capabilities work over the internet?

I'm not sure how it goes with AI, but Battle Chess comes with a version of Chinese Chess, which is virtually unknown in video gaming. That's what I'd go for, personally. But you have to respect Combat Chess' better graphics and presumably interface. Frankly, anything is better than Battle Chess' turtle-like Rooks that can move 7 squares a turn but take five times as long to do each one.

I'd second that. The chinese chess is well worth a look and you won't get it anywhere else as far as I know. The AI was certainly good enough to beat me when I played it years back, although that might not be saying much. The fighting pieces, on the other hand, get old very quickly in games like this.
I was tempted by Chessmaster 9000 myself as I lke the idea of learning to play properly. I wouldn't say it was a steal even at this price though. I've ordered a boxed copy of the Grandmaster Edition on Amazon marketplace instead and even after postage it only cost an extra £1.

I grabbed Battle Chess, and Chessmaster, as they both seem to have their own sets of pros and cons.
