Il-2 Sturmovik, Blitzkrieg, Silent Storm S2, and other War & Strategy games 60% off

This weekend, our [url=http://www.gog.com/promo/back_in_the_ussr_weekend_promo_16_11_12]"USSR Invades! War & Strategy Games" promo storms your screens with a tactical advantage of a 60% discount! GOG.com HQ has planned this sudden strike for weeks, and to ensure a totall victory we've allied with the Russians, and former Soviet republics. After all, it worked like a charm during the final days of World War II, and those developers and publishers excel in strategy and war games. Let's not waste time here and see what arrived in the reinforcements package from Russia (and former Soviet republics), with love.

For air support, we've got Il-2 Sturmovik, a highly praised title coming from the (sadly) almost extinct breed of realistic military aircraft simulations). Armchair generals will be extremely satisfied with Blitzkrieg Anthology and Blitzkrieg 2 Anthology--two feature-full RTS titles taking the realistic and historically accurate approach to the famous campaigns of World War II. Or if you like something less serious, but maybe even more challenging, try S2: Silent Storm Gold--a complex turn based strategy set in an alternative time-line, where the German Nazis excelled in technological advancement.

We're also happy to announce, that and [url=http://www.gog.com/gamecard/soldiers_heroes_of_world_war_ii]Soldiers: Heroes of World War II--two games that gone MIA for a little while--have made their way back safely into GOG.com catalog, and are reporting for active duty. Just in time for the promo!

Do you doubt the military (gaming) potential of Eastern Europe? Head out to our our "USSR Invades! War & Strategy Games" promo page to see at least 17 titles proving that it should not be taken lightly!

Last, but not least--here's our video summary of the week. In case you missed it, here's what's new!

Thank you sooo much for bringing awesome old games back. I played Cossacks as young boy for hours and it was awesome... but I didn't find the CD anymore. Thank you so much for bringing back old memoirs. You're great!

G-Doc:
Congratulations on getting Perimeter and Soldiers: Heroes of World War II back!

Are there any differences between the new versions and the old installs? Obviously the installers have been updater, but they're both 0.1 GB bigger now, too, and I see that the wallpaper and screensavers didn't come back with them.
I already own Cryostais, but I heartily recommend it to you... provided you have a strong computer. Mine can run it, but not in its full glory. Also, its PhysX effects require a nVidia graphics card to see some of the water effects. If you have those things... GET IT!

I was thinking about getting it but wasn't sure, how exactly dows it play? The trailer showed mostly shooting, but I hear a lot of it is more of an adventure style. And don't worry about my computer, it resembles the monolith from 2001 a Space Odissey and was blessed by blind monks from Nepal, so performance shouldn't be an issue.

To everyone else, is King's Bounty worth it when I already have Heroes of Might and Magic 5 and haven't gotten around to it yet?
Cryostasis seems to be wondering how it got mixed into all of this.
So I saw the title of the promo and I went here all excited thinking Original War will surely be a part of this. And it's not. And I'm a sad panda. A very sad panda. Come on, gogsters, Original War doesn't seem to get any discounts in here, even though it's a cool game!

King's Bounty is super - I spent 300+ hours with that title. Great replayability - randomized enemies, loot and different class (warrior, paladin, mage) has different skill tree and different gameplay. Battles are similar to Heroes of Might and Magic 3 - turn based system, you can cast spells, units have special abilities, plenty of different units. The game has also real time mode when you explore continents/islands, talk to NPCs and solve quests. The graphics are still nice (I play Warriors of the North now - 3rd expansion to King's Bounty The Legend, which has the same engine), the game has depth and a bit of humor, but it's very addictive, especially for a person who spent lots of time with Heroes of Might and Magic series. And for that price it's a no-brainer. Just be warned that this game can suck you in - even the tutorial I played like a dozen times, because it's so interesting, and you can play the game in small and big time intervals (15 minutes-5 hours).
My laptop barely can handle Cryostasis. I´ll try the IL-2, although the only plane sim that I´ve played is F-22 Lightining 2.
Speaking of The Eastern Front In WW2....how about Panzer General 3:Scorched Earth? I was expecting that to show up after GOG got Panzer General 3 D but it still has not shown up.....
Why the butts is Cryostasis on there. It's great game, but what.

Is it because of the Russian bit?

Think so as it aint a stratagy game.
Good to see some games returning. It's a pity that the removed-without-notice Space Rangers 1 and 2 (+Reboot) aren't among them, they'd also fit perfectly here. Oh well, we can't have everything at once, I guess - I hope they'll also eventually find their way back here, though.
Anyway, nice promo again, there are quite some interesting titles ion here.

In general it plays rather slowly. At the start of the game, you're completely limited to melee weapons. Then you get your first, bad shooters. Later in the game, it does become more combat-oriented. There are some adventure (or rather puzzle) elements to it and while shooting becomes more prevalent, these elements never vanish. The most important part is the presentation of the story, and that only improves over the course of the game, with hints to what's going on coming about sparingly. In fact, some people dislike how slowly the story develops, but I think it needs to take its time. Even when it's focusing on combat, it doesn't really become a typical, Doom-like shooter: Enemies usually only attack in 1s and 2s and every fight is a threat. All in all, I consider it to be a flawed (especially on the technical side) but magnificient game with a great atmosphere and very interesting story.

I can also whole heartily recommend King's Bounty. If you love the HoMM combat system and rpg's, you will love this game.

If you get easily annoyed watching the same unskippable summoning animations 50 times even sped up, dealing with fetch quests that send you several times across the map and a few loading screens, and the visual design of the map that sometimes makes it unclear, which areas are walkable and which are walls, then you might not enjoy KB quite as much as other people.
