dipsal: Hiya folks. If I had to choose ONE might and magic game what would you recommend? I've never played one before but the strategy and fantasy appeals to me. Thanks :-) /sheds wallet tears.
Heroes or Might and Magic? Heroes is the strategy one and 3 is pretty much unanimously considered the best. Might and Magic are the RPG ones, and I'd go for the 6-pack due to the great deal (and 4/5 are very good so far).

Thanks for the quick reply buddy. Ah see, I didn't even know there was a difference between MaM and HoMaM. But I will surely check out HoMaM 3 and the 6 pack MaM.

Have a good weekend.

I would second this for sure. For me the best two plays are HOMM3 and M&M6. A lot of players prefer games like M&M4/5 but the interface is just too ancient for others. M&M6 is a massive game in 3D, great balance, fantastic dungeons - still playable for the modern player. The spin off of HOMM3 - Heroes Chronicles is also terrific and is essentially a kind of expansion pack anyway.

How easy is Panzer General 2 to approach? I'm a veteran TBS gamer and a fan of grand strategy games, but I'm not all that versed in realistic wargames.

Same goes for the Battle Isle games. No experience with those, but am intrigued.

I'm considering getting Panzer General 2 too (along with Ghost Recon and M&M 1-6) but I'm not sure if it will even work on Windows 7 64-bit. I am reading mixed reports.

Supposedly it is a simple game by wargame standards. A veteran of strategy games like you probably should have no problem with it.

PG series is not that realistic. It's mostly about learning the pecking order of various unit classes, and then using them in proper sequence during assaults.
You guys really are just taking things direct from my wishlist for these sales. Next week, try dropping the pretense and just make it the "Tallin's Wishlist" sale to finish draining my bank account...
Finally an acceptable price for Assassin's Creed! At the standard 20$ it's more Ubisoft' s Greed than Assassin's Creed :-) This and Far Cry is finally off my wishlist.

I third this. I remember hearing about the HOMM games long ago but I had initially wrote them off as mediocre spin-offs, that ended up being very foolish on my part as a few years ago I bought HOMM3 during another GOG sale and I loved it. Granted I haven't played it all the way through as i've got caught up in other stuff, but to anyone who is thinking of buying one of HOMM games during the sale, you will not regret getting HOMM3.
As for the main series, the only experience i've had with it was a Super Nintendo port of Might & Magic III: Isles of Terra. I enjoyed what I played of it as well, but I found it quite hard at the time.

Yes go for the best one - HoMM 3!!
Is might and magic 9 worth getting? I checked the reviews, but all of them seem to have been written by people who haven't even bought the GOG version, and they're all talking about how broken it was, but they don't know if GOG has fixed it or not. Really not helpful. At all :(

xep624: Hopefully their hearts will change and one day I would like to see Heroes 6...

mistermumbles: Somehow I find that an unlikely prospect. As far as I can recall, doesn't HoMM 6 use some online mechanics a la Diablo 3 (just on a lower scope) that require some of the necessary game content to be accessed from one of Ubi's servers during play?
No, HoMM VI single player really is single player. There are these little map features (conflux orbs?) where players can leave hints for each other (more like spoilers and vulgarities) but that is the extent of it. HoMM VI could be played totally offline when I played through it last spring.* You won't be able to use your dynasty goodies (extra weapons and hero abilities) as those are linked to your online Conflux profile but those are unnecessary and kind of cheaty IMHO.

*launch the HoMM VI executable with the '/offline' switch.

With the unofficial patches it's quite stable, less of a script mess and generally playable. Character development system isn't bad. Dungeons can even be enjoyable it you approach them with first person shooter in mind.
However the overworld travel can take long: the maps are small, but they use twisty paths to stretch the travel time, you have no "jump" of "flight" spells and the portal workings are annoying. Also you'll be setting a lot of crap like skill books all the time. Not to mention that some areas do feel empty and unfinished even with all the fan updates.

So it's a case of "Not as much of a betrayal as everyone says, but it just doesn't stack up to the rest"?

Ah. Thanks for setting me straight. I wasn't quite sure what the deal was with that.
