Shaolin_sKunk: Does Earth 2140 still have broken A.I.? Might skip the series if that's the case.
avatar
McDon: How is the AI broken? Just curious, in case I decide to buy it.
I was just reading some of the reviews for it, apparently the A.I. would not build buildings and such in the Windows port. Bit of a moot point anyway since Judas has informed me that it includes the DOS version which does not have problems with the A.I.

I hope you have better luck getting the DOS version to work on your machine than I did mine. I purchased it (along with all of the Earth series games on special this weekend), and after reading about the missing AI in the windows version tried out the DOS version. I get no sound during the intro/movies/or briefings??. I say ?? because it seemed like when I went to play the game, a screen appeared that just... sat there. I assumed there must have been sound on it since it looked like a movie of some sort and it was giving me instructions/objectives for the scenario but I don't know, and then when I hit a button and got into the actual scenario, I finally had sound.

And trying to get it to start was fun. It took about 4 tries the first time, and about 9 the second (a message comes up on the screen saying it can take several tries to start).

Somehow I read that line as 'Totally Topless'. *scrubs his dirty mind* =P

rampancy: This is the obligatory "Will this work in WINE?" post about Gorky 17 - most of the posts on the web I've seen about this game are for relatively old versions (1.1.x) of WINE. Apparently this suffers from some pretty serious problems, but I'd like to know if anyone's had better luck on newer versions.
Ignore if this is irrelavant/wrong information. I have completed the Gorky17 (the gog version) and played it on two different computers (a laptop and a netbook), both with Win7. I encoutered pretty much no problems. I think the game crushed once at the beginning but it was a one off incident.

Wow, to be honest I thought the DOS version added as an "extra" meant we were more or less on our own. It's pretty awesome that you're willing to support that version too.

However, I feel like I'm not even sure what to report to support. As for the multiple tries at starting the game, there's a message on screen saying to expect that, so I assume that doesn't get reporting. And as far as no sound during the intro/movies etc., I have this same issue in a couple other games (SMAC/SMAX comes immediately to mind) and thought those types of issues were likely system specific. I tried the advice I found here in many support articles to run the program as administrator, but that didn't help. Should I report all the games I'm having that issue with at once?
Yesssss! Enclave! And Gorky! Wooooo. I've been waiting for those, and kicking myself for not picking them up at Christmas. No more, now they are mine. Muahhaha.

You know, I'm kind of curious why the GOG version of Two Worlds II is Windows only. I know it has an official Mac port because I have it on Steam. In fact, it might even be a native version, the Windows and Mac releases were out on the same day. I certainly have not had any performance issues with it yet. *shrug* Oh well, at least I can pick up Two Worlds I with a clear conscience.

awalterj: Ah...finally got my hands on Gorky 17 and Septerra Core. I remember reading the lukewarm reviews those two games got in German gaming magazines but there was something intangible about those games that grabbed my interest, even from looking at a few tiny printed screenshots, call it intuition. Not sure if I'll enjoy those games and no idea where to take the time to play them but at that low price, I'll gladly take the risk.
I did not play Gorky (well the demo, when I was a kid, but that doesn't count). However, I can recommend Septerra Core. It lacks some polishing at certain points, especially the dungeons and battles at the end become a bit annoying (At some point I started cheating through the trash-mob-battles because they take a lot of time ^^) but it has a really cool story and an even cooler world. You can see how much work was put into the world and it's background and I had a really great time playing it.
Additionally, I would recommend using a walkthrough from time to time, because sometimes the game lacks information on what to do next. I used this one, http://lparchive.org/Septerra-Core/
which had some funny comments on the game and more important: maps of the areas.

Try this, it helped me with sound issues in gaming, if you are using a Windows 7 64bit system,

by selecting "Disable front panel jack detection" in the Realtek HD Audio Manager "Connector Settings" dialogue box.

After doing this, I was also finally able to run Call of Duty Modern Warfare in multiplayer, and pezbot,. It always crashed before making that change... :/ Hope that helps.

HypersomniacLive: Completely unrelated question, quoted to get your attention.

I'm flirting with Jack Orlando, but I'd like to know if the two alarming things I read about both in the game forum and the reviews have been fixed:

1. Game crushes during intro.
2. Sound Problem: The music is overpowering the voices.

Have these been addressed?

Thanks ahead :-)
I am not sure as I don't deal with the technical side all that much but if you, or anyone else, experience those problems please write to Support. The more unique system configurations we have, the better the chance that we can find the problem or problems :)
Looks like it's time to pick up the Earth 2100 series!

Also, Pinball games? Takes all kinds I guess.

Well, I'm reluctant at buying it if it's not fixed, as I'm not going to play it right away and don't feel like going back and forth with support, sorry.

Could somebody from support chime in and provide a clear answer? Or do I need to ask support directly?

I appreciate the effort, but I meant WINE (and no, I'm not yelling, it's actually an acronym), as opposed to Win/Windows. :)
