Smannesman: The first one is a regular FPS with large levels, the second and third are more open world sandbox-y FPS'.
Far Cry 2 is quite nice, although it's a very brown (Africa) world with respawning enemy checkpoints and an annoying malaria gimmick where you have to take a pill (and get new ones) every hour or so.
It's still nice to drive jeeps and boats around the decent sized world and do missions for the different factions to unlock new weapons and upgrades.
I actually feel that Far Cry 2 is kind of underrated. It's not a perfect game by any stretch; it has its flaws, but I'd still give it 4/5. It's a lot of fun driving around and upgrading your weapons.

I actually had to pick it up in this sale, I played it a few years ago on my brother's computer, but I didn't get very far in it.

Smannesman: It's not that bad, you get several attacks of blurry vision after 45 minutes or something and on the third attack you pass out and wake up in a clinic or church. What really bothers me about it is that it doesn't add anything to the game.
They should've just declared you cured after you take the pill and ignored that silly mechanic for the rest of the game.
They could even have made you contract the disease again if you jumped in stagnant water or something, but nope.
Personally I found the respawning checkpoints to be more annoying, I would've liked it if I could've killed everybody there and afterwards it would always be safe/empty.
I get it from a game standpoint, you know that it makes sure that you'll always have battles to fight. But personally I just find it tedious.
Still a decent game though.
It does sound as though the disease mechanic is poorly thought-out and unnecessary. I bet there is an "anti-malarial patch" out there that someone wrote to hack it out of the game entirely.

I can relate to the respawn issues, those pretty much ruined the first (unpatched) S.T.A.L.K.E.R. for me. The decision to implement those kinds of respawns makes a kind of sense from one angle, but becomes burdensome on the player in the long run and keeps them from enjoying exploration.

I'm really, really not an FPS person, but I'm always curious to try things that are out of my comfort zone. I understand Painkiller is really good, and I've been meaning to try it, but is it accessible to people without any FPS skills/experience?

In general, is there a title in this promotion which is newbie-friendly? :)

Yeah, it was particularly bad in case of Stalker as it totally contradicted the "A-Live" system or what they called that concept with the living world. It's hard to buy that there's actually a simulated living world when enemies just popup in the same places, often on sight. At least I wasn't expecting as much from Far Cry 2 as from Stalker but it was still a frustrating experience thanks to those absurd guard posts.

Unreal Tournament 4 ECE could be a nice start to add an FPS game to your GoG shelf.

You can play against bots in all the game modes, not sure if the multiplayer is still active. Plus you can add to the game with mods.

Watch some gameplay/Let's play videos on youtube to see if any of the games on sale might fit in with that "place you want to explore" environments. And don't be afraid to challenge yourself with a game that looks interesting but might appear too difficult, yet still looks inviting to you. ;)

... If you like story driven shooters, I would recommend Chronicles of Riddick as well, though it will challenge you a bit.

I haven't played Painkiller, so I can't comment on that one. But I think Medal of Honor is pretty newbie-friendly. Medal of Honor: Allied Assault was one of the first FPS game that I played on PC.
Despite there being some major battles, you can usually move around at your own pace and take your time. The gunplay is very simple yet very satisfying.
It is a good learning experience. It starts out easy and gradually gets more difficult, but you are learning the most effective ways to fight throughout the whole game, so it never becomes too challenging.

That is a really good point. If I recall correctly (which I might not, it has been several years,) there are lots of options for the bots as well, like changing their intelligence level, how many can be on each team, and how aggressive they are. Definitely a good option.

I couldn't ever get into Painkiller Black, the enemies seem so monotone and art design feels so pretentious. Maybe I should revisit it as some point if people keep saying it's some sort of saving grace for first person shooters.

Yea I may get UT 2004. I remember loving the bot battles. And they were crazy hard, and the game went by so fast blazing. But UT is also a masterpiece in its own right. There's also so many great FPS games this go round. So much content for so little price...

Would also be nice to see Swat 4 hit the GOG.com store sometime...

Painkiller is a good start. even for an FPS it's kinda easy as long as you do a lot of bunny-hopping and circle strafing (you normally can't afford to keep still). But it's unique for having almost nothing to distract from the shooting. No puzzles, no bloody keys and not much plot to speak of.

Medal of Honour 2 is the second simplest on this list. The level design is quite straight forward but the gunplay is good
fun.
I'd personally recommend Blood or Unreal as they are both really great games with great atmosphere and weapons. But they are both hard by FPS standards. Unreal has some puzzles and Blood has a lot of key hunting.

Serious Sam is one of the best FPS games ever but it's really fecking hard. It does have a tourist difficulty mode however. You can also swap blood and gore for fruit.
