Eador. Masters of the Broken World, Etherlords 1&2, Blitzkrieg Anthology 1&2, and more 50% off!

If USSR still existed we're pretty sure its economy could largely depend on game development. There are so many talented people in Russia and former Soviet republics, dedicated to creating complex and solid games, that if the Soviet Union still existed this part of industry could become huge--if only the communists in charge were actually interested in economic development. Let's play a little make believe: imagine a Soviet Empire built on the foundation of gamedev studios, producing top-quality strategy games. If it was preparing to take over the world, the first step would surely be a [url=http://www.gog.com/promo/soviet_strategy_strike_260713]Soviet Strategy Strike. Today, we offer you a taste of the imaginary Soviet Strategic Total Warfare, with a 50% discount!

Eador. Masters of the Broken World is one of the biggest, toughest, and most extensive turn-based strategy games in history. It takes all the complexity you would expect from a 4X game (that is: eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, and eXterminate), adds some extra challenge, extends the gameworld beyond measure, and finishes off the mixture with some top-notch dreamy graphics. The game faced some issues upon its release, but ever since, the developers worked towards squishing all the bugs and implementing even more features. This is the first time you can get the game 50% off on GOG.com. At $9.99 this game quite probably the best value for your money, when it comes to hardcore turn-based strategic gameplay!

If fantasy isn't your thing, you can still get your share of turn-based goodness mixed with real-time gameplay in a captivating Sci-Fi setting. In Altar Interactive's UFO series you'll be commanding a squad of special force operatives facing alien menace in tactical combat. Drawing inspiration from Microprose original X-Com games, those titles deliver their very own variety of terrifying extra terrestrial threat. Witness the entire interplanetary conflict from the first days of the invasion to the final strike against the aliens in three gripping iterations. You can get UFO: Aftermath for only $2.99, while UFO: Aftershock, and the concluding UFO: Afterlight are available for only $3.99 each. Don't miss your chance to defend the Earth!

That's but a small sample of what game the full Soviet Strategy Strike delivers 50% off. Direct yourself to the promo page, for the full varied and robust offer! The promo lasts until Tuesday, July 30, at 3:59AM GMT. Don't miss out!

Aftershock and Afterlight are listed as $4.99 on the bundle page, not $3.99. Which is wrong? The bundle page or the thread text?

IAmSinistar: Will probably give a pass on the UFO series, though, even at these prices. The reviews just sound like the games would depress an X-Com fan like myself.
Only played the first 2 but I have to say, they're really not bad. I suggest you pick at least one up and see for yourself.

Ghorpm: There is some GOGmix that summarize it... here it is. Add Two Worlds 2 and Anomaly to the list. Perhaps a few more...
Lol, haven't seen that one in a while. In fact I haven't seen GOG mixes for ages, thought the feature was removed altogether. Should probably update the mix. :P

Also Hard Reset and Shadow Warrior should be added - well, not to the mix but generally to a list of Polish games.
And yeah, it's incredible that the new Shadow Warrior, a remake of the sarcastic manifestation of American ignorance on Asian culture, is being developed here.

I'm really considering Eador: Genesis right now. From what I'm seeing of a Let's Play I'm watching, the GOG description and screenshots really don't do it justice. It's like Civilisation style city building and tech tree, Dominions 3 levels of province amount and detail as well as an even more complex exploration mechanic and Age of Wonders style of combat and unit/hero leveling.

On the other hand, I'm absolutely crap at strategy of all kinds and I'm so impatient that I easily get burnt out within a few hours of play. Not to mention, I don't know how well balanced the game is. But still, it's only $3. Even if I do play for only a few hours, it's very good value for money.

Ah, decisions, decisions...

tinyE: I don't own a single one of these, far out.

Can anyone tell me if American Conquest is any easier than Cossacks? Cossacks is okay but just way too much work.
What do you mean by "too much work"? Cossacks has a Gold rating on the WINEhq AppDB, and I'm thinking of picking it up, even though the demo didn't seem to work in my testing.

Actually, the province management is much simpler than in Dominions 3, and there's no "tech tree" like the one in Civizilization . Game's awesome tho, you're a fool if you don't buy it.

You have to keep your peasants fed, your army fed, and your army loaded. I don't mean armed, I mean loaded; EVERY bullet gets deducted. The food is even worse because as soon as it gets too low workers die and soldiers stop fighting. So what do you do? Increase food production? Problem; more workers, more food consumed. Over and over you spend 90% of the game just trying to keep your workforce alive all while the enemy comes in and marches over you because you can't defend yourself because you had to send your metal workers to the fields to keep up food production in order to keep your metal workers from starving but they aren't working metal because you had to send them to the fields to produce more food because your soldiers are starving not that it matters because they can't fight anyway because they don't have ammo because you had to send your munitions guys to the fields to get more food to keep your miners from starving and etc etc etc...

If you go in expecting an X-Com remake, you will be severely dissappointed. The games did claim to be inspired by X-Com (and they are), but inspired isn't the same as remaking. So, let's go over them.

Similarities:
Alien Threat.
Research and Development
Strategic Layer
Tactical Layer
Permadeath

Differences:
Simplified strategic layer (different to no finances, no council to please). This does not mean simple strategic layer (ok, maybe in Aftermath), but don't expect to have to juggle wages, or to be transfering scientists between bases near the end of the month to avoid paying the 6 million in wages.
No interceptions. The games have no air combat in them (or at least I can't recall any).
Tactical combat is Real Time with Pause. RTwP does work surprising well in these games, and I wouldn't call it less tactical. But it's not Turn Based, so you do need to have a different mindset going in.
Much smaller squad limit. Usual squad is 5-7 people, and if you have to capture or extract someone you need one space free, so you may find yourself going in with just 4 soldiers.
No nameless soldiers. I think the only game where you could recruit as many soldiers as you could afford was the second (and imho best), Aftershock. For the others, you have a limited amount of soldiers available, so you will have to take care of them.
Soldier training. The soldiers level up, they gain stat points, and if the stat points are high enough, they can receive special training, most common ones being medic and sniper. Depending on the game, some equipment may require specific training (sniper for example), or having the training will provide bigger benefits (medikits).

As Licurg said above, the games are good. But they are not X-Com any more than Terraria is a 2D Minecraft. If you do decide to grab one, I'd suggest UFO: Aftershock, along with Weapon Rebalance and Heroic Assault mods. Both can be found over at Strategy Core

JMich: snip
Great information, thanks! Gives me a much better idea of what to expect from the games. I already splashed out on Perimeter and American Conquest this morning, so may have to wait before buying anything further. My bank gets antsy when they see all these small charges to the same place.

Tranquil.Suit: Damn, I've been spoiled. -50% Just doesn't do it for me anymore.

But that may have something to do with my 150+ games backlog.

Heh, I'm not even planning to play all those games. I just look at my collection, close my eyes, and fantasize about playing them.
Lucky you. I get anxiety attacks. (Yes I'm seeing a doctor and there are more serious things that triggers my attacks).
nice promo. Etherlords and Eador: Genesis were the only ones i could afford.
Thanks GOG
Forgot to add my concurrence that Eador: Genesis is unmissable at this price. Very good game, as long as you are aware of the largely undisclosed turn limit.
There's a mistake in the summary. It lists the final two UFO games for $3.99, when they're $4.99 in the sale.
Eador Genesis is a great (one of my all time favorites atm) game. Does anyone know if Masters of the Broken World is still Masters of the Broken Game?

"American conquest is a Soviet game."

I just wanted to share that great catch phrase. It should be on the trailer.
