Here I was thinking Nordic was still/would be forever off GOG. Glad to see them back! :)

Buenro-games: Here's my dilemma. I can get all the games I want plus the strategy games which are ok, for around $20. That excludes the adventure games, which are not my thing. BUTTTTTT, for only $4 more, I can get the 10 extra adventure games! So its $0.50 per each adventure game!

mobutu: Buy all pack (90% off) as a gift, redeem all the games you want or are interested in and keep the rest of those unwanted games on gift code for trading or whatever.
Great idea. Thanks.

Grargar: Wonder how long will ShinyLoot last...
When I asked 2 weeks ago they said no intention of budging off the no regional pricing or restrictions position (but also no intention of DRM-free commitments, just keeping the ability to filter by that)... But then again I had a talk with GOG support 2 months before the "good news" moment when I was told the exact same thing.
Has anyone tried that Spellforce 2: Demons of the Past?

mobutu: Yes, they'll make (more) money after they'll return, because gog's customer base is constantly growing.
All the free games that gog already gave avay for free in the past are still selling and they will also sell in the future.
And nordic will also bring new titles here which will generate even more sales/income.
imo it's only a question of (short) time until we see nordic here again on a permanent basis.
Anyway, the point is stop seeing only your little box and start thinking "macro" ;)
Little box? No, I simply don't make the assumption that the company will return and that it will bring more titles if it does.

Ever notice how little interest there has been when people attempt to give away copies of The Witcher and Torchlight, because so many people have acquired them for free during limited-time gOg giveaways? 90% isn't quite a giveaway but it's a discount big enough that it will sway a whole lot of people to buy now, people who won't be customers of those titles upon their (hopefully permanent) return. New customers do come along to find around 800 titles to choose from but I suspect the large number of customers already here (you and me, for example) won't really be adding much to the sales numbers after this particular sale except for the few holdouts like myself and those buying for giveaways.

For the sake of the catalog I hope I'm wrong but we won't know until it happens, just as we don't know that a return will bring titles previously not found in the gOg catalog. Possibly will, but other companies with extensive catalogs have stopped adding more titles so it's tough to say what this particular company would do without being privy to their sales and marketing plans. Either way, time will tell.

And I'm not going to buy them now, no matter how cheap they are. Make it a permanent return and they'll get my attention. Anyway, I put it out there because voting with one's wallet is one thing but it doesn't tell the company WHY that person isn't buying the product. This is me telling them why I'm not buying at this time. I won't fault those who are buying the games this weekend, because 90% is one heck of a discount that is very difficult to ignore.

Good luck with the sale, Nordic, but please consider returning permanently and adding more titles.

Magmarock: C'mon guys please stay, Steam is turning into shit we need GOG.
avatar
mobutu: turning into? as far as i'm concerned, it always was.
touche, but I think it's gotten worse.

We still need GOG to grow to show the big publishers that there is a future in DRM-free gaming. I've lost count of all the recent games I've had to skip because there was no DRM-free equivalent. Game devs are selling their futures short when they lock down their games with this DRM nonsense, thus preventing players from playing their games some 10+ years in the future. Could you imagine where the Doom modding/engine community would be if it were completed locked down with DRM 20 years ago?

Yes, i've seen that thou I have to say i don't know about torchlight but regarding witcher 2 it's too soon to tell. Of course right after the giveaway there's no interest but i was gonna "bet" that interest for witcher 2 would rise also in the future, lets say just before the launch of witcher 3 in may15. Unfortunately we will not know because the gift codes expire in 10 days or something ;(

HereForTheBeer: ...we don't know that a return will bring titles previously not found in the gOg catalog.time will tell.
time will tell indeed, but regarding this particular case (nordic) i remember that Black Mirror 3 was unofficialy confirmed for a gog launch (on forum by the developer-thomng) and then the whole fisco between gog-nordic regarding prices happen ...

yea, me neither but because i already have what i like/want from their as-of-now catalogue and i wont buy games, no matter how cheap, just for them to rot eternaly on my shelf with me never playing them.
I strongly believe and hope on nordic's return and with it new games from their catalogue and then i'll be all over black mirror 3, titan quest etc

And that is perfectly fine and normal, if only everybody would express their feelings towards developers and their actions then maybe this industry will be less infested and hopefully normal-ish.
Personally, I think this in/out it is a mixture of two key strategies.

One: Nordic probably saw a huge increase in sales on GOG when it was first announced that they would be leaving, for whatever reason that actually was. Mass buying by people on GOG when threatened by the future loss of games in the GOG catalogue.

Two: no doubt Nordic will be well aware now that GOGs user base will have gone up dramatically after that last sale with the free witcher2 and movie.

What better way to get another huge boost to sales than to come back again to the increased GOG membership and again claim that it is a last chance saloon on their games.

If I am right about this, I would expect this kind of marketing crap to continue and possibly involve similar moves by other publishers.

I am by no way trying to tell people not to take advantage of the deals though.

Just saying I am too long in the tooth to buy this-we are leaving as GOG is no longer tenable, but actually we might pop back in once and a while.

If you think about it, it is quite a despicable act by Nordic.

The Torchlight giveaway was a while ago (two years now?) so maybe the sales have started to normalize. Not that they're likely release the info, but I'd be curious to see the sales graph as it relates to gOg giveaways. The Witcher is a bit harder to gauge since IIRC it has been given away more than once.

We should form a gamer's union! ; )

You can abandon your conspiracy theories. GOG asked Nordic to do this promo, not the other way around...
