[url=http://www.gog.com/promo/might_magic_universe_2]The Vast Universe of Might and Magic on GOG.com is filled with all-time classics with a 50% discount. If you have anything important to do in coming days, please reschedule, because such favorites as Heroes of Might and Magic III or Might and Magic VI will keep you busy, well, forever. The offer doesn’t last forever but only until next Monday, April 9th at 11.59 p.m. EDT.

Heroes of Might and Magic is probably the most recognizable, acclaimed, and legendary of the whole Might and Magic series. It’s a game that set the standard for turn-based strategies for years to come--one may argue that HoMM created a genre of its own, while every fantasy strategy nowadays will be compared to this amazing series. HoMM is a combination of strategy (many opponents, many castles, many heroes), RPG (gathering experience and leveling), resource management (gathering resources, managing armies) and pure awesome, something between the cracks that makes the game so special. It doesn’t matter whether it's Heroes of Might and Magic, Heroes of Might and Magic II: Gold Edition, Heroes of Might and Magic III: Complete, Heroes Chronicles: All Chapters, or Heroes of Might and Magic IV: Complete--each of them is a game so simple to understand and yet so insanely addictive that it will make you want to play “just one more turn” over and over again. If you’ve never played as the Hero, we recommend starting with Heroes of Might and Magic III: Complete Edition--the title considered to be iconic to the series, the magnum opus of 3DO. All the HoMM games on GOG.com are only $4.99 this weekend.

If you already own all of these, you can also pick up Heroes of Might and Magic V Bundle, which includes both of the game’s expansions (Hammer of Fate and Tribes of the East) and more than 170 minutes of soundtracks, an official artbook, wallpapers, avatars, design sketches. Pick Heroes of Might and Magic V up for a limited time together with Assassin’s Creed: Director’s Cut Edition on a special introductory sale: buy one, get one free for $19.99.

Might and Magic, on the other hand, is a series of RPG games set in the same universe. From the deepest dungeons to the intrigues of the royal court, lead a band of adventurers on a dangerous journey of amazing depth and intelligence. Develop your characters through an unique skill point system and take part in an epic clash between the Ancients. Gather your forces, forge new alliances and destroy all who oppose you. The fate of the world is in your hands!

Might and Magic 6 pack includes: Might and Magic: Book 1, Might and Magic 2: Gates to Another World, Might and Magic 3: Isles of Terra, Might and Magic 4&5: World of Xeen, bonus adventure Swords of Xeen and Might and Magic VI: The Mandate of Heaven. After you’re done, get Might and Magic 7: For Blood and Honor, Might and Magic 8: Day of the Destroyer, and Might and Magic 9 to complete the Mightily Magical experience. If you’ve never played any Might and Magic games, we’d suggest you pick up the 6 pack for $4.99 and start with Might and Magic VI: The Mandate of Heaven. All Might and Magic games are 50% off only this weekend.

yyahoo: Chronicles consists of several standalone campaigns. There are no standalone maps to play. It is HOMM3 for beginners. The difficulty level is less than beginner. Throughout the game basic level hints will be given, i.e. visit standalone creature dwellings weekly, regularly visit the windmill for extra resources.
Wait a sec - I think there should be difficulty settings, right? I agree, there are some tips for beginners druing play but still. I was playing Chronicles at higher difficulty setting and it was quite decent challenge. (you should be able to change this setting before each map of each campaign - you do not need to play at default setting)

Yup, I've just found a screen with difficulty setup:

yyahoo: I see several questions about Heroes Chronicles.

I just finished playing it for the first time, so I'll share my experience.

Chronicles consists of several standalone campaigns. There are no standalone maps to play. It is HOMM3 for beginners. The difficulty level is less than beginner. Throughout the game basic level hints will be given, i.e. visit standalone creature dwellings weekly, regularly visit the windmill for extra resources.

On the whole, it is rather lengthy, but experienced HOMM3 players will likely find zero challenge and will in fact regularly finish maps before the daily text boxes stop providing parts of the story. I ended up sitting in front of the last enemy and skipping days and days in a row on most maps just so I could finish up the storyline for each one.

As for the other games in the sale, I prefer HOMM3 over 2. I always felt like 3 was much more balanced than 2 (my favorite unbalanced unit in 2 was ghosts. If you could convince a roaming group to join your hero, you were essentially set for the rest of the map.).

I always have a great love for M&M IV and V combined to make World of Xeen. Talk about the strategy of game balance. Unlike many RPGs where you simply cannot enter areas of the game world where you character is not strong enough to survive, World Of Xeen will allow you to explore those areas at your own peril. You'll be moving along just fine until you run into a monster that you can't even scratch with your characters' current abilities and/or weapons. There's something thrilling about exploring the game knowing you could suddenly find yourself overwhelmed and dead at any moment. It also makes it that much more rewarding when you finally get the ability/weapons to go back and take those bad boys out. Just remember, save often...
This sounds a bit like Chronicles isn't much worth for me, since I've played HOMM 3 quite long time. But then again it might be worthy for some new players, seeing that price is also allright.

You're right about Ghosts in HOMM2 which were bring into by the Expansion pack. But as far as it goes in terms of balance, I think that's only really big dent in balance that there is in HOMM2. Both HOMM2 and 3 have bit irritating unbalance with teleportation type of spells, whereas computer can flee or enter your city out of nowhere. It wouldn't even be that bad, if they weren't aware of your army's strength in the city, but they are. They know when you leave your city for attack - I think this is worse in HOMM3.

But that is afterall just a minor complaint that doesn't manage to boil things down. The games are classics and I still love to play them today.

HoMM3 is my favorite game and most played one in whole series, yet I still had fun while playing Chronicles sometime ago :)
I don't have a single game from the series. I was thinking of getting a HOMM game and an rpg. Is HOMM3 and the six pack the best combo to get? Or is one of the later rpgs better?

You might or might not find the first two games of the six pack completely unplayable, depending on exactly how "old school" your tastes run (or don't run), but it's probably the best value for your money with 3 - 6; 6 plays pretty much exactly like 7 and a lot like 8, so I'd classify it as "later" Might and Magic. It's also a natural place to start because 1-5 form a distinct story, while 6 - 8 take place in their own worlds with little connection to 1-5. Everyone tells me 9 is terrible; I own it, and will try it one day, but for now, no comment.

So ... whole lot of words to say, "Sure, go with the six pack." I haven't ever played the Heroes series, so no comment there.

Heroes Chronicles is also good if you want HoMM3, but only if you like the HoMM universe and stories.

Leroux: I'm thinking about doing it the other way around, especially if the difficulty of Chronicles is generally lower (like I wrote in my first post, what put me off while playing other Strategy games was the difficulty, they were hard to get into for a newbie to the genre, even a bit unfair, I think). Am I missing something vital if I play Chronicles before HoMM3?
Nah, Chronicles would be the best starting point in that case.
I own them all except for 9 and Crusaders. I'm in no hurry for those so pass on this sale.

I can not agree about "lower" difficulty - it can be selected during setup and could be challenging. Also, by chronology, story in Chronicles is happening before HoMM4, so...

That's true, but if comparing Chronicles and HoMM3 on the same difficulty level then Chronicles is the easier one. As for story, I don't think that matters too much since for the most part Chronicles is separate from HoMM3 and just focuses on Tarnum and his adventures.

9 isn't too bad if you're in the mood for a Lithtech engine FPS... with retarded outdoor areas, dead cities and fairly decent dungeons. And if you read some sort of FAQ with warnings of possible quest errors.
