Waxworks, Downfall, Secret Agent, Chaos Overlords, and many other classics up to 70% off!

Hear ye, hear ye! In case you missed it, spring has arrived and with it comes our [url=http://www.gog.com/promo/spring_weekend_promo_160514]May Myriad of Games!! This weekend we are offering a cornucopia of classic titles, ranging from horror in a living wax museum, a cyberpunk dystopia with turn-based gang warfare to a post-apocalyptic point-and-click adventure where Man is a mostly a myth. The temperatures are high (unless you are in rainy Europe) but the prices are low! Let's take a look at the classics we've got lined up for you!

and [url=http://www.gog.com/game/the_cat_lady]The Cat Lady. Usually, when we write about these kind of promos, we mention one game at a time in these blurbs but these two games should be played together, starting with and then [url=http://www.gog.com/game/the_cat_lady]The Cat Lady. In Downfall, you, as Joe Davis, will explore a hotel that isn't quite what it seems and you'll encounter many twists and tuns that may warp your psyche just a tad. In The Cat Lady, set in the same universe as Downfall, you'll take on the role of Susan Ashworth as you come to grips with the reality of depression and battle against five Parasites, ruthless psychopaths that wear human forms. If you're a fan of Remigiusz Michalski's psychological horror, you can't pass these stylish adventures by!

Before he was known as the greatest ladies man to grace the Earth, Duke Nukem had his humble beginnings in Duke Nukem 1 +2. With classic side-scrolling platforming action, you'll go through Duke's first forays into video gaming fame. Battle against the fantastically evil Dr. Proton, get kidnapped and fight back against zombifying aliens, and see why Duke wrote a book called "Why I'm So Great".

It wouldn't be spring without a bit of chaos! If you're looking for a classic cyberpunk turn-based strategy game, you can't go wrong with Chaos Overlords. You'll wage war against rival overlords sending out your gangs against theirs in a tense war of influence over a vulnerable city.

Each game's a classic in our May Myriad of Games! Grab a wide variety of games for up to 70% off until Tuesday, May 20th 3:59 AM GMT. Spring is in the air!

Tooms: Can't get past all the bad reviews for the Ishtar series.
Having a look at the gog reviews. Most of them seem to be four star reviews. The handful of negative ones seem to be either by people who cant handle older difficult rpgs or its an issue with their pc/setups....even tho its realtime combat im tempted to get it :D
Excellent weekend promo; great games at great prices! Unfortunately I won't be able to participate this weekend as I have exhausted all my funds during the Insomnia sale.
I need some info about these please:
- Hocus Pocus -> watched an LP.. seems pretty dull.. mostly nostalgia?
- Secret Agent -> many say that Crystal Caves (not here) is better. However, DukeNukem1+2, Commander Keen and Bio Menace (both not here) are probably enough for Apogee platforms.
- Ishar Compilation -> err..I quite like the graphic.. but reviews say they're all average :(
- Catacombs Pack -> wow, a pre Wolfenstein fps I missed or forgot about.. but any good?
- Chaos Overlords -> ugly..but entertaining?

- Realms of Chaos -> seems good

I only played the first Ishar a bit today and all i can say it's one of those typical "hardcore" RPGs from the early 90's.
It has no real map or coordinates and all the houses in the villages look exactly the same, not even the shops or inns have a sign. So it's very easy to get lost and very hard to know where you are or find certain places. IMO you have to draw maps if you really wanna play Ishar and i don't have the patience for that.
The Battles are in real time and you have to constanly click on "attack" or other actions (like healing etc.) for each character.
And best of all - each time you wanna save it costs 1000 gold! You start with 2000 gold and don't get really much from monsters or your party members so you have to grind constantly. :D

I'd say if you haven't played the Ishar games back when they were new you will need a lot of patience to get into them.
This video should give you a good idea what to expect from the first game:

Ugh.. that's quite bad (lol the save). I'll think about it, then. (maybe those are fixed in the sequels?)
Thanks Impaler, +1

P.s: there will probably be user maps somewhere in the web

EDIT: I've read other reviews and they're soo bad.. they mostly say that all Ishars have cool graphic but poor gameplay and content, plus bugs. They suggest to just play the more famous games and skip these : (

Oh thanks Ghorpm. +1 to you too.
So it's a turn-based strategy game, right? How long does a game last and how's the difficulty?
The main screen is so basic.. mm.. I dunno.

That's what Catacombs can be considered: Wolfenstein with magic, or better yet Heretic before there was a Heretic, and seeing that the game was created by iDSofftware, Catacombs is pretty solid for what it is. There are hidden secret room, power ups, etc. I only played part 3 the most, part 1 and 2 if i recall are overhead. It is a hidden gem title.

I, too, am really stumped on what to get. Have 6 games i can't choose from...

I'll surely buy Duke Nukem 1+2 and Terminal Velocity, because I liked both in the past.
About the others, I'm totally unsure (and they're soo old).

Having bought Secret Agent during this promo and having played it quite extensively the past few days, I would recommend it. The first game starts off easy enough, the second gets a bit more challenging, and I'm still looking on how to finish the third one. After that, there's stil lthe prospect of gonig for perfect runs, trying to go for the highest possible score, collecting everything and losing no lives. The puzzles are challenging,t he atmosphere fun and it's the kind of game where graphics don't matter that much, so I'd say even that aged well. Some of the backgrounds are really old Windows wallpapers, adding to the nostalgia factor. But this game is more than just that.

I'm also enjoying it more than the Duke platformers.

Hocus Pocus is pretty dull, I have to admit. Still, if you like colourful, not that hard platforms to spend some minutes of your time, it might be a nice choice. It's surely not the best game from Apogee, though.
Secret Agent and Crystal Caves are quite similar, I remember even confusing them in the past. I preferred the CK series and Bio Menace, too, but again, if you have few bucks it's a nice old-style platform.

Yup, it's turn-based :)

There are 4 difficulty settings and I would say they are nicely done. The easiest let you experiment and learn how to play the game while still being challenging enough so that it won't be boring. The last level - "homicidal maniac" - is very unforgiving but it's rewarding to beat it.

The length of each game depends on the chosen objective. There are 10 possibilities, 6 of them are without time limit like "kill'em all" or conquer and control sectors with headquarters of each gang at the same time or control 2/3 of the city. There are also 4 objective with a time limit - either half a year or 1,2 or 4 years (each turn is one week long) and the winner is a person who accumulate most:
1) cash
2) power
3) acceptance
4) sum of those three

"kill'em all" takes a lot of time to complete, time limited objectives (especially with half a year limit) can be finished within 15 minutes. I really like those different objectives because every time you have to adjust your strategy a bit. In "kill'em all" you need a lot of gangs to hunt and kill everybody. If you are set to control headquarters you should rather focus on being able to defend each headquarter after you finally conquer it. If you are supposed to accumulate cash you have to think twice before hiring any gang or doing scientific research - do you really need it?

Once again: I can wholeheartedly recommend this game.

I agree with this, except I had the most trouble near the very beginning. One of the first levels puts you in a difficult situation before you've likely had a chance to get a hang of the controls. Still it's a great game. I definitely prefer it over Duke 1-2. It's one of the gems I've found on GOG that I did NOT play back in the day.
It's probably a bit late since the sale is almost over but I just played through the first episode of Hocus Pocus so I thought I'd give some comments. It's got good controls, graphics, and music but it kinda falls flat on level design. Many of the levels are quite big but that's only because they're incredibly repetitive. It's like they cut and pasted the same platform + enemies ten times in a row. On the good side, at least most of the levels aren't linear, though you can get trapped, unable to complete the level, if you use the warp potions in the wrong order (in at least one case). Also, the one powerup leaves your character blinking for the (substantial) duration of it's effect which is both distracting and makes it hard to tell if you've been hit. Overall it's still a decent game, just not as great as some others in this sale (like Secret Agent).
